I am applying for a Master's degree program in Vancouver. I currently live with two dependants. My 1.3 year old daughter and my mum, who basically takes care of her while I work. Can I bring both of them with me from Ghana on a study permit?

No you can't bring your mother. You can apply to bring your daughter and you will be accepted or refused based on your application.

Apply alone first. after you get the visa and arrive you can try to have them follow. Right now they're your ties to home. A huge necessity for your application. Good luck!!

You can't bring your mother. She would have to qualify as a visitor based on her own ties to her home country and finances. CBSA determines how long a visitor can say at the POE but the maximum is 6 months. If she is approved for a TRV and is granted 6 months she could try to extend. As a visitor she would not be able to work in Canada including childcare. All these things are far from guaranteed.

Agreed, she would need to apply for her own visa, however there's nothing that says she cannot babysit or accompany her grandchild if they visit it doesn't have to count as work as she isnt being compensated. Visitor status is extendable. If they want to they can try. Didn't say its guaranteed.

As a visitor she can't do any form of work that a Canadian could do. If her mother wasn't in Canada she would need to pay for childcare. This forum is filled with cases of grandparents being refused after mentioning they were caring for grandchildren or their pregnant/postpartum daughters. It will be hard to arrive at the same time as them because it will appear that she is moving with them and will be caring for the daughter. As the parent of an international student it may be challenging to get a TRV but it will be really difficult to keep extending a TRV past the 6 months.

right thats why i said let them come after she has settled in canada. The mom can accompany the toddler and stay. as far as i know a local settlement worker told me a while back that parents can visit up until 3 years because myself and my family visited and extended for 2+ years on extended time and thats what we were told.

she only needs to explain that the child misses her and her mom will accompany the baby for a visit. But they do need to have ties to home so she should be prepared to show these.

This is all false. Parents are not allowed to visit for 3 years. You can apply to try and sponsor after 3 years. If you do't know the answer please don't reply. Your parents likely had a supervisa which is very different.

It is not that simple or else everyone would be approved. She is also an international student not a PR or citizen.

Getting a TRV extended for 2+ years is fairly unusual because that would imply that they were living in Canada. Yet again a temporary resident does not have access to extended visit visas like a PR or citizen.
