Marriage affecting sponsorship

Hi, here is the situation, my girlfriend is planning to sponsor her parents in this coming year, and her income just made the cutoff, but we are planning to get married next year. According to her, this will affect her application because adding me to the family size would disqualify her, is it true that my income can't be added if we get married after the application submitted. Does it mean we can't get married until the application is approved if she intended to apply for next year?

You must inform IRCC of any changes to your family situation. If she applies to sponsor her parents, and then gets married, she must update IRCC of the change in the family. If that means that your income drops your combined income below the cutoff, then the two of you will not be eligible to sponsor.

your girl friend could apply to sponsor her parents if she meets the min income requirement but her income will be re-evaluated after your get married as her family size will increase.....so she may include you as a co-signer after your marriage, as your income could be added to hers to make her meet the min income requirement.

For her fear to be true, though, you'd have to be making something like just under $7,000 per year.

You may need to ask IRCC that. If they will count you as an addition to the family for cutoff purposes, they should count your income, but I'm not sure.

Depends. If you are a Canadian citizen/PR and your income is from Canada, you can be added as a co-signer and your income can be counted. If you are not a Canadian citizen/PR, then marrying your girlfriend would make her ineligible to sponsor.

I may be wrong but I don't think you can be added as co-signer after she submitted her PGP application. That is like buying car insurance after you gotten into an accident. I believe you need to be co-signer in order for your income to be included before she submits the application.

When the marriage/common-law happens after submitting the app, as they plan to, the spouse can be added as a co-signer (provided they meet the requirements as stated in my previous post).

Please also do not forget to ask the spouse in advance if the spouse wants to be a co-signer and understands the consequences.

Does CIC call center answer questions like this because I need to be 100% sure about this, otherwise our relationship could be heavily affected by this sponsorship situation, if I can't be added as a co-singer after, we will not be able to get married for a few years...

IRCC call center should at least be able to tell you if you can be added as a co-signer after the submission.

I am sure your fiance must have thanked you for your kindness but I thought I'd take my hat off too! I was on the same boat but my fiance (at the time) didn't want to co-sign my mother's application. Congrats for stepping up to the plate!!
