How to get reference letter from employer?

Hw can I obtain employment reference letter from my employer without telling him tat I m trying for Canada?
As if I will tell them then it will cause negative impact on my job.
What other excuse I can give?

Some ideas

1. Say that you need it since a landlord is asking for it before giving his house to you on rental.
2. Say you need it for some temporary visa purpose such as visitor visa.
3. Say that you need it as a part of application for some conference
