My trip involves crossing the Canadian/US border – does it require my passport?
Persons travelling across the U.S./Canadian border should research information on documents needed to cross the border from the relevant U.S. and Canadian government agencies; as such requirements are subject to change. A valid passport is required for citizens of any nation, including citizens of the United States and Canada, to cross the border in either direction between the United States and Canada. Passengers are advised to consult with their government if they seek to cross the border without a valid passport. For U.S. Government information, passengers should consult with U.S. Customs and Border Protection at www.cbp.gov. For Canadian Government information, passengers should consult with Citizenship and Immigration Canada at www.cic.gc.ca.

A guardian travelling with children must provide proof of custody or notarized parental authorization for travel. An adult accompanying a child who is neither a parent nor guardian of the child should have written permission from a parent or guardian to accompany the child across the border, including the name and contact information of the parent or guardian.

What should I know about crossing the border?
Let’s give the border guards a break and make their jobs easy. Know that all luggage is subject to inspection when crossing international borders.

You will be asked to declare any items subject to duty upon crossing the border.

Passengers must claim their luggage at the border crossing point for clearance through customs before being allowed to proceed across the border. No luggage is allowed across the border unless claimed by a passenger.

Thank you for that information! They only normally check that my passport is in date for me as I travel on a regular basis. I would wait for the card but this is an emergency. I’m just panicking that they will not let me in upon return. I work the next day lol. Surely they would have to let me in technically as I am a pr?

The officer I got the copr approved with told me I could use it until I get my card which clearly wasn’t explained properly

Yes, as a PR, you have the right to enter. However, without a commercial carrier seeing a PR card or PRTD, *they* don't know this, hence the reason why airlines at least will not allow you to board.

Oh I see so the main concern is with the commercial carrier compared to the border. At the border I’m fine but the commercial company are uneducated in a way about the pr system?

Yes, the PR card and PRTD are to get you on the transport... Once you are in front of a CBSA primary line officer, the COPR or, in fact, any documents that prove your identity and can be used to establish your PR status, will suffice.

I don't have my PR card yet, I'm in Seattle and plan to rent a car (Alamo) to drive cross the border with my COPR and passport to enter back to Canada, would that be any issue? I understand we can use a private car but not sure if a rental car is considered a "commercial vehicle".

Did you end up travel to the US and got back to Canada through a bus with your COPR and passport? Did it work? Or you had to drive your private car to make it work?

If you are from a visa-exempt country, an eTA is issued at the same time as the COPR, linked to the passport number used in the PR application.

Hello, I have a query.
My CoPR expires on 20 Sep 2019. Would it be safe to travel to canada for the first itme on Sep 1st? PR issuance will take a further 2-3 months. By that time my CoPR would be expired already. Would my stay, because of expired CoPR and pending PR, be illegal? Just trying to gain clarity so I dont make any mistakes. Will appreciate help.

Also any email address or contact number where I can get an official reply/acknowledgement on this?

I have a COPR and single entry visa. They both expire on the same date. So once i land even if my visa and COPR both expire, it doesnt matter? I'll be a PR. just without card

Guys can someone help me with my question?

My parents have COPR and are currently visiting me in the US. I will be taking them to Canada via road in my car. However, I am not a Canadian PR but I have a Canada visitor visa. Will this be an issue? Should the car be in their name to be accepted as private vehicle? This is not their first landing as PR. They landed in Toronto Airport directly from India. Please help.
