From a work permit that is about to end to eTA

Hi,

My work permit ends in few days and I'd like to extend my stay in Canada for several days more. I do have an eTA that I did about ~2 months ago (before entered to Canada), but I entered with my work permit. So - while being in Canada, is that eTA still valid? should I make another one and mention somehow that I'm already here? if so, how exactly?

Thanks!

An ETA is not a visa , it just allows a visa exempt passport holder to board a plane for Canada, it does not allow entry to Canada . So are you visa exempt or are you referring to a TRV ?

If you want to extend your stay you could go the official route, extend stay as a visitor application, once submitted you can stay pending a decision. By a few days stay you really mean a few days 3/4 ?

@Bs65 Thank you.

More like tomorrow:/ I was actually referring to an eTA. According - https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/application-forms-guides/guide-5551-applying-change-conditions-extend-your-stay-canada.html:

"For applicants who require an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to enter Canada: The renewal of a study or work permit does not affect your eTA. It is your responsibility to ensure your eTA remains valid if you wish to re-enter Canada. While residing in Canada and holding a valid study or work permit, you may apply online for an eTA. For more information, visit Electronic Travel Authorization."

I'd like to extend my stay for about 6 days more, that's it.

Also, yes, I'm visa exempt (Israel).

I've just found this document - https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/visit-canada/apply-new-temporary-resident-visa-within-canada.html

After answering the questions, it seems like there's a form called IMM 5708 (in order to extend my stay) - I read that I should've filled it 30 days ago, so I'm not sure if it's even relevant for now (?).

The stamp on my passport shows "31AU2018" although I know that usually there's no problem with 6 months stay (here for 2.5 months already). I guess it's there because that's what my work permit paper shows.

Given that I'm via exempt, will I get into troubles by those 6-days overstay?:/

This is not clear. You say your work visa is ending today, but then you say you have been here for 2.5 months already? How long was your work permit actually for? You came on a work visa, so I would imagine you would have to leave the country and then come back for your 6 months visitor stay to kick in again. Where are you from?

@russ6970 Yes, I've been to Canada for 2.5 months, I had a work permit for this period, that is ending today. My flight back to my homeland (Israel) is in 6 days, it means that I'm going to overstay 6 days. Leaving the country and coming back is an option, but not for me:/ I cannot leave to USA as I need a visa which I haven't.

I think I'll just go to the airport in 6 days and see. What should I expect for? a fine (if so - any idea how much?)? maybe an "overstaying record" in my passport or something like that? even a ban for several years?

Thank you.

You need to apply to change your status to visitor. The 30 days is a recommendation, not a requirement.

A 6 month stay is only allowed when there is no date given in the passport.

You won't get in trouble now but will never be able to say No if asked about an overstay in future.

Thank you @canuck_in_uk. Isn't it too late to change my status now (I'm kind of considered illegal in few hours and cannot apply right away)? it costs 100C$ and I'm not sure what's the added value for 6 days overstay only (vs. just ignoring it and hope for good at airport).

Your status is valid until midnight tomorrow, the 31st. Not too late.

Nothing will happen at the airport; Canada has no exit controls. Also note that you withdraw the extension app after you leave Canada and likely get a refund.
