Relocating from Alberta to Ontario after 7 Months

Hello all,

I landed here in Canada in Alberta on February 2018 where my wife had her work. However, recently I found a job in Ontario. and I wanted to prepare for my relocation. I wanted to ask about the following.

1- How do I transfer my health insurance (Do I cancel it here then apply there If so would I be covered within this time as i heard it could take up to 3 months.

2-In tax forms my wife mentioned that I'm unemployed when she first started work how should we change this status

3- any other useful information and if you have any advise regarding relocation it would be great.

1. You use your Alberta heath care for the first 3 months until you get OHIP. You may have to pay out of pocket and submit the receipts. When you get OHIP, cancel the AHCIC coverage.
2. Just start working. It will all be adjusted when you file taxes for 2018.
3. Use reputable movers, check on requirements to register a car (if you are taking one)....it may be cheaper to sell here and buy there, if you are driving, go through the US if possible....Ontario and Lake Superior goes on forever....it’s painful (day one ...”oh look, Lake Superior” in amazement...day two “ oh look, it’s Lake Superior” in disbelief....day three “oh.....look.....it’s still Lake Superior”....as you fumble for the cyanide pills....goes on forever......and ever....and ever

OMG. You made my morning. LOL Haven’t laughed this much in long time. Drove from Calgary to Toronto several times and your description is right on! Worst part of drive through northern Ontario.

Do you think any family doctor would accept taking me while I have AHCIC or it would be challenging.

In Ontario, finding a "good" family doctor at all is a nightmare. Be prepared for a significant amount of work. It took a while for us, and we have family "in the trade".

If you are seeing a doctor for a medical condition now, see if he can get you a referral to a doctor in Ontario before you go.

If it just day to day stuff, it should be much of a problem getting into a drop in clinic.

Exactly! And OPP there is relentless. Single lane each way most of the way, with no opportunity to pass trucks, no cell signal. When it gets dark it’s like a scene straight out of a horror movie hahaha

OMG. You made my morning. LOL Haven’t laughed this much in long time. Drove from Calgary to Toronto several times and your description is right on! Worst part of drive through northern Ontario.

Driving through northern Ontario was not bad. Very scenic drive. Compare to the desert highway between Vegas and Reno, driving at 55 m/hr or 90k/hr which is vey boring.
