Hi All

I am beginning to calculate my weekly hours and I have a few questions.

Should unpaid lunches or breaks count towards the weekly total.

E.g.- paid for 6.5 hours but with 30 min unpaid break/lunch . Would this count for 6.5 or 7 hours?

Should a week be calculated from Sunday to Saturday or Monday to Sunday- this makes a slight difference to my weekly calculation.

Thanks

John

The hours that are mentioned in your paystabs only will count if you are getting paid hourly .

??? If you work at least 5 days a week, this is simply "full time" (30 or more hours per week), you do not need to count hours (that is only for part-time workers).

If you worked part-time (fewer than 30 hours per week), then you count hours worked (not unpaid lunch breaks). In your example. 6.5 hours....

Ok thanks for helping to clarify things - my contract offers no set hours, however i do tend to work 5-6 days a week on average between 6.5 and 7.5 hours a day.

During my calculation process:
  • i have 36 weeks in which i have worked over 30 hours a week
  • 11 weeks in which i have under 30 hours. (fte 8.6)
During some of those 11 weeks if i calculated the working week Sunday to Saturday it bumps the working week to over 30 hours ( and doesn't bring the previous or following week under 30), that's what i am trying to figure out.

On that same note, i am paid vacation 4% on my biweekly pay cheque and am allowed sick days but receive no pay.

To my understanding as i receive no compensation for sick days / hours then i can't count the time i've missed-e.g scheduled for a 6.5 hour day went home sick after 4.5 hours. My timesheet shows the 4.5 hours pay, this is all i am allowed to count. Is that correct?

With regards to holiday, guidelines state 2 weeks paid vacation. How would this work in my situation? (Time taken as holiday is not shown on the timesheet).

Would i be right making this calculation:

1- calculate average daily hours worked across a year.
2. Multiple this by 10 to give my number of hours over a 2 week period.

If so, then this would boost all 11 weeks to over 30 hours. Would this be allowed?

Thanks all

Correct, unfortunately, since sick pay is apparently not a benefit available to you.

Your 4% vacation pay is the equivalent of 2 weeks. So you can count 2 weeks of vacation, but if you take more, you will have to treat it as unpaid leave (you have to exclude the time).

Go by the standard "work week" as determined by your company.

Would i be right making this calculation:

Umm... No....

I can't state that you would not get away with it, but if the VO asks you to prove your hours, you could potentially lose your eligibility.

If you are paid bi-weekly and your hours on your paystubs are for 2 weeks, you COULD get away with using 60 hours bi-weekly as "full-time."

Word of advice - if you are trying to massage your hours that much, you are trying to cut it way too close. Remember that one year (52 weeks) is the MINIMUM required. MINIMUM. I always recommend giving yourself a few extra weeks to ensure that a miscalculation does not derail your application. If you give yourself a buffer, make it obvious that you have more than a year, then you don't make the VO scrutinze your hours, do all these calculations, etc...
