Study Permit Refused

Hi everyone,

I applied for a Canadian study permit last month and received a letter of refusal today citing "personal assets and financial status" as the reason for denial.

I had applied under the General category for a studying in a postgraduate diploma program. The reason I applied under General and not SDS is because the bank was willing to cover my living costs equalling 10000 CAD per year but they wouldn't cover it without me getting the visa approval first. I submitted all the required documents as asked by my consultant including the bank loan papers and property papers, etc.

I have got a 7.9 CGPA in my bachelor studies and a score of 8.5 in IELTS. My course is going to begin on the 27th of August so I'm not sure if I have enough time to reapply. Do you think I should ask the college for an extension and reapply or is it a waste of time? How do you think I can improve my application?

I have worked on this admission and visa application process for months and I am very disappointed by this outcome. Any advice would be appreciated.

What all did you show as your proof of finances? You mention about bank loan of $10000 but what about tuition fees? Did you pay the fees upfront and include the receipt in your application? Or you showed funds in your accounts?

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my query.

The bank loan I got is covering everything including my living expenses, my insurance, and my tuition fee. It's a 43000 CAD loan which covers my tuition fee and living expenses for not just one year as required for the GIC rule but two years.

I did include the first semester tuition fee payment receipt and the bank loan sanction papers. I also showed funds in my bank account and my father's bank equalling around 4 lakh rupees.

I am stumped what else they need. I am not sure some senior members will be able to help you better but you might have also needed your parent's sponsors letter and itr return. Again I must reiterate I am not sure. Sorry though that your visa got rejected. After so much pain and efforts it is very disheartening.

Thanks again!

I included my dad's financial support affidavit (if that is what you mean by sponsor letter) and I also provided my dad's ITR returns from the last three years with my visa application. I am really not sure what else I can provide as that was all the funds and property that I have right now. My consultant also said that a loan this huge should be more than enough.

It is quite difficult to take because I have been working on this for half a year. Just getting the loan formalities done took me about three months of running from one office to another. Getting all the property documents ready and translated from Urdu (I am from Kashmir) took a while too. I have never been as disappointed as I am today after investing so much time, energy, effort, and money into this. Not sure what to do right now, hoping for better days.

Your reply was very helpful and kind. Much appreciated.

Hi,

I didn't pay for GIC because the bank said that they will cover my living expenses for two years but they need the visa approval to disburse the money. They were talking about a FOREX card, I think.

The loan is disbursed when needed, for instance, when I would have needed to make the second-semester fee payment I would've had to contact my bank and they would make the payment. In case of living expenses, they were going to disburse it to my account after providing the visa approval letter.

Thank you for replying!

The reason I asked the questions I asked previously was to actually clarify if you paid GIC. In the case of personal funds not even loan this time, CIC requires you to get GIC to prove you have funds, some applicants have been refused also for similar reasons as yours and only few applicants has gotten an approval with similar scenario as yours

The solution is to get a GIC of $10280(except GIC is not applicable to your country), try to find a means to disburse(show) the rest funds in your personal account then show your personal account also(supporting the transfer with the loan letter to avoid any suspicious huge reflection of funds), then if possible try to pay for a year's tuition fees given that your IELTS is very good which boost your chances(but a semester is also considerate), Employment letters.. Introduction letter.. leave letter.. promotion letter.. payslips(if you working)

After doing the aforementioned, then you can include or support your application with your parents ITR, landed properties, Parent's bank statement(not necessary but by choice, it will boost the strength of your application).

This tackles your Personal asset and financial status

The conditional loan is probably the problem, I would look more into that. Have other people been granted permits with such a loan in your country? If unsure defer your studies till next year and get the caips notes to get some clarity.

I am not sure that I can get the bank to disburse the living expenses without the visa approval. In the city where I applied, the bank officials are quite ignorant regarding education loans and I had to take the help of a loan consultant from Gyandhan for them to even consider my application.

I had already supported my application by my parent's ITRs, payslips, bank statements and property papers.

At this point, I am considering giving up because there is not much I can do to improve my application right now and my semester was beginning on the 1st of Sep. I feel helpless and all of it feels pointless.

Thank you for your suggestions and help.

I think so too.

Unfortunately, I don't know if I can defer till next year right now. I will have to talk to my consultant. And the student loan will gather interest till next year too so I have to consider that.

Yes, a friend of mine was granted a study permit in the General category last year after getting a refusal in the SPP category (as it was known at that time) and given the same reason. I have emailed him to know what he did to improve his application. The only difference is that he had a GIC certificate but it's not mandatory under the General category.

I think I failed to clarify in my application that part of the education loan was going to be used for living expenses too. I think that's the problem but I'm not sure because the reason given is vague, to say the least. I assumed that they would understand that the loan includes the living costs because the loan amount is higher than the total tuition fee.

I think CAIPS notes will take some time to arrive. I will have to talk to my consultant about that too.

I will consider my options with my consultant and get back to you tomorrow.

Thank you for your help! :)

Can't you defer for next semester?
CAIPS will take a month, if you apply now you are good for Jan sem.
What I heard is that until you withdraw some amount from loan, interest is not accumulated. So ask about it too.
