Dog food

Hi

I apologise if this has been discussed earlier but I can't seem to find a straight answer anywhere.
I'm flying into toronto next week from India with my dog. Am I allowed to carry dry dog food (which contains meat)? I'm sure I'll have to declare it but I'm just confused with meat products not being allowed, etc etc
Anyone has first hand experience?

Guess you will need to wait for someone who has imported to answer but for sure of course needs to be declared If you decide to bring it so maybe answer is bring it but declare and leave the decision to customs. Maybe keep the volume to a few kgs just to get over a day or two before buying local and probably best for it to be commercially packaged still unopened.

Thanks. I've read this link before and according to that I am allowed to bring a personal supply but it only applies to people coming from the usU. So what about India?

Read the link more carefully. It contains information for items brought to Canada from countries other than the US as well.

I think it is pretty safe to assume it will not be allowed. I assume you will be bringing food with you to feed your dog on the plane. Worst you will just have to dispose of it at the airport as directed by border services.

I cannot imagine why you would want to bring more food than that. The dog food in Canada is pretty good.

My suggestion is that you start feeding your dog with a brand that you'll easily find in Canada.

Most dogs are pretty adaptable when it comes to food and will eat just about anything with maybe the odd exception flipping between dried or non dried food.

Ultimately your decision as long as you declare, do not arrive with many kgs of food, still commercially sealed/packed and leave to CBSA to decide. But for sure always declare .

Guidelines seem pretty clear though that only personal import from US is acceptable but not clear if dry food is included but given no distinction have to assume it is so US only. Not that difficult to find a store after arrival and buy local , if the dog is hungry enough will eat anything more important this time of year is keeping the dog hydrated after a long flight.

As would expect but the OP wants to bring food from India which is not covered by the guidelines.

Years ago, I brought my senior from China with a small amount of dry food.

The food was not allowed by the first border officer and he said the secondary would determine its ingredients but at the secondary - the agriculture officer didn't care and I exited with the food.

In my case, I started feeding my dog with a brand that is sold in Canada. I'll take a night flight and buy food in Toronto immediately after leaving the airport. That way, my dog will sleep the entire night and be fed at the usual time.

Yeah, I make my plans according to her needs, not mine.

Thanks for the response everyone. So I guess the general consensus is that it's safe not to try to Import any dog food. Of course I'll be carrying food for the journey so I can feed her but will then discard of the rest. My only reason to carry an additional bag of dog food is that we land late night and I really didn't want to go scrambling around in a new city right away for dog food. But better to be safe.

If you identify the city and area, someone here may be able to advise on 24hour stores nearby that would stock a range for the immediate need.
