I think references do NOT need to be Canadian citizens...only guarantors...correct?

I'm thinking of using an acquaintance (who is Canadian citizen) as a reference...but she might not know specific details about me.

So what questions are asked of references and guarantors? It would be nice to know (particularly recent experience from other forum members), so I can choose references who know me well enough to speak about specific details...

I am not aware that my references or guarantors were asked any questions when I applied for my passport. I think this is merely a formality.

It may vary but references are asked of how long they have known you (whether their answers matched your answer on the application). How do they come to know you a.k.a what is the relationship? Do they know that the applicant is applying for passport and have them as a reference?

I have been a refernce for several people... Till now nobody called and checked.. Rest you need to be ready if in case they call. With questions like how long you know each other

My passport was sent to me yesterday. No one called the guarantor and the 2 references...

Depends, but it's generally going to be basic demographic information.

My passport application, made in person at Scarborough: They called my guarantor within 15 minutes of me leaving the passport office and played twenty questions: When did we first meet (how long did he know me). What was our relationship (coworkers). What did I look like (basic description of what my face looked like, build, and height). Where did I live. They did not call my references.

When my brother applied, I was guarantor, and two of his friends references. They didn't call me or either of his references on his application.

A friend of mine was a reference for someone. He got a call from the Passport office and was asked the following:
- How long have you known X?
- In what capacity do you know him?
- Approximately how tall is he?
- What's the colour of his eyes?

He couldn't answer the eye colour question but it wasn't a problem apparently.

Thanks a list of questions was what I was hoping to see! Other questions that have been asked of references in the past that I've come across:
  • Describe his appearance
  • What is his wife's name?
  • What is his country of birth?
  • Where does he work?
  • Where does he live?

In my experience based on what trusted family members and relatives told me about there road to citizenship here are list:

They will ask at least 3 routine questions to verify your identity, like:

1. Hello, Do you know John Doe and how long you know?, MUST ASKED Question.
2. What does he do for living?
3. What's is his current address.

If you wrote you were always unemployed on your citizenship app or they give deferent addresses than the ones on app and they say you worked with them for yrs and I know from Montreal last two yrs but your app has no address of Montreal but all in Toronto past 2 yrs than you are toast.

(THEY MIGHT ASK YOUR DATE OF BIRTH and HEIGHT esp Guarantor)
that's why its important your lawyer, nurse and family doctor have to be your guarantor.

Hi guys,

Do you know if it's ok to include someone as reference who is just a temporary resident in canada Visitor/Tourist?

Thank you!

Hi

The reference must be one of the following:

  • have known you for at least:
    • two years for passport applications
    • six months for Certificate of Identity or Refugee Travel Document applications
  • not be your guarantor
  • not be a family member
  • be 18 years of age or older
  • agree to you using their name and contact information for your application
From the above, it is assumed, I think to be living in Canada (condition: to know you for more than 2 years in Canada)

Regards,
