Hello Everyone,

Just a question about Nexus Program. On the application, they need 5 year employment history but I can’t recall exact months of employment in the 2013-2014 as I changed few jobs.

So my question is do they go into detail of that information??? Employment is not a requirement of enrolling in NEXUS program. Do they call the employers to check the employment history?

Please share your experience.

Thanks

I can't remember exactly because I did it a few years ago now, but I think I only had to put the months down and not the actual dates. I copied the details from my PR application because they basically ask the same question on that.

Hi there,

Nexus cards are strictly designed for 'low-risk' people crossing the borders between US & Canada. So I would say yes, they will dig very deep into all the information you provide. You have to remember, you will be essentially pre-approved every time you cross the border. That is their trust invested in you, so they have to know if you are trustworthy. This being said, I know of friends that they had their applications rejected on some minor infractions, they appeal the decision, they sat on secondary interviews and they had it passed. Also once you get your Nexus card, that doesn't mean you are not subject to customs and secondary searches and questions. But it's less likely in contrast with others without Nexus. One more thing: one little mistake and/or misrepresentation, and you can say bye bye to your card. Didn't mean to scare you or anything, just wanted to give you a heads up!

My personal opinion; if you are a frequent traveller, and I mean at least twice a month, then it's worth it. If not, don't bother, the lines for Nexus are getting larger and larger every day and you will be just 5 to 15 minutes ahead! Tops! I tried this on the other long weekend at Blaine border Vancouver. My friend with Nexus got in only 15 minutes earlier. It will sure help you out from LAX to YVR, but that's pretty much it. Any other airport is almost the same.

Best of luck,

I agree that unless you travel frequently, it is not needed. But I I disagree that it only saves you 5-15 minutes. It depends. I'd say if the airport is not busy and all the lines are short, then yes the time saved is not that much. But on the days where it is busy, you will be glad to have NEXUS. It is not just immigration that is faster, but also the security line. It allows be to come to the airport later than usual since I can count on the NEXUS lines to get me to the gate pretty quickly. No longer do I need to show up hours early "just in case the airport is really busy".

There is also convenience, such as no need to take off shoes, belt, etc. In some US airports like LGA, being a NEXUS (Trusted Traveler) allows you to bypass the new body scanner (which some people feel is a heath risk with the radiation) for the standard metal detector. Non "trusted travelers" do not have the option - it is either body scanner or hand pat search.

And yes, agreed that providing accurate and detailed information is vital.

The downside with Nexus is once you make a simple mistakes or infractions, e.g. forgetting to declare something or having someone in your car that has no Nexus while crossing the border, you are judged more harshly than someone who is not a Nexus member.

Yes, it is assumed that you know all the rules so if you violate one, it is harder to plead "oh, I didn't know". That excuse will not work

Of course, saying you didn't know is surely not an excuse, but if you're very tired or preoccupied... it can happen. I know a few Nexus members this happened to... for some people, it's not worth the hassle.

Nope! Wrong! So what? The officers are tired & preoccupied too! Remember you are crossing an international border! Having a Canadian passport / Nexus doesn't change anything, in fact, you will be held against higher standards having them! It's expected of you to act like a Nexus holder!

In a nutshell don't f*** with the CBSA officers! Especially if you hold a Nexus. 'Didn't know', 'don't remember', 'not sure' are not good answers! It will only take one time! Once you get pound by them, with questions hitting you from left and right, getting your cell phone searched, getting questions about your private messages, etc. you'll learn to remember! You'll remember down to the exact time you took the second sip of your Coke at an American McDonald's a week before the crossing! Well, I'm being silly, but you know what I mean! Hehe ;)

Have your car/suitcase spotless every time you cross and list all that you have bought, declare everything including your shoe lace even if you are wearing it. And state the truth. All the time, every time!
