Hi,

I am an international student in canada who is planning to take a unscheduled break for next semester while I wait for the decision on my express entry PR application. Experienced members on this forum informed me that I should change my status and apply for TRV. Can someone explain what is the difference between study permit and TRV. The documents required for the application of TRV requires a valid study permit. So what is the difference between a study permit and TRV?

Thanks

You probably already have a TRV its the thing stuck in your passport that allowed you to travel to Canada. You should consult with your international office before doing anything, there can be consequences to taking unscheduled breaks.

TRV is just a visa which allows you to enter Canada once you arrive at the airport or border.

Permit is a document that actually authorizes you to work/study in the country.

You can stay in Canada even after your TRV expires, however if you exit the country without renewing the TRV, the CBSA you will not be allow you to re-enter Canada unless you have a renewed TRV.

On the contrary, you cannot stay in Canada once your permit expires and you must leave the country. Trust this helps!

If a person already have 10 yr visitor visa, does it gets canceled after study permit is issued?
Or both are eligible side by side?

Hi

You need to apply to change your status to visitor. Nothing to do with a TRV.

A TRV is simply a stamp in your passport allowing you to board a commercial carrier to travel to Canada. It has nothing to do with status in Canada.

Status, i.e. a study permit, work permit or visitor status, is granted by CBSA when you enter Canada.
