Hi, one of my sons passport expires within 1 year from now (june 2019). We are about to submit application for PR in the first days of August.
Any idea how does the passport expiry changes things? It may be less than 6 months validity left on it by the time we are ready to enter Canada.
Changing of his passport is not all that easy as he is not Indian national and Embassy of his country is really tiny and in the past refused taking passport renewals, not sure how the situation is now.
What if the passport is changed after getting the immigrant visa, but before the actual arrival in Canada, any procedure to follow?
Any input will be much appreciated.

I would strongly suggest renewing the passport before you send it for the visa. Otherwise, you would have to send the new one for the new visa. I think it is the only way.

All depends on your plans of when you plan to land in Canada. If you can manage to do your landing in Canada before the passport expires (Jun 2019) you should be fine.

If you are still in Canada when the passport expires, you can apply in Canada for the passport renewal with the embassy of the country that has issued the passport, which may not be as "tiny" in Canada.

The other option is to wait till the "tiny" embassy is willing to renew the passport and then apply for renewal and inform CIC that you have submitted for renewal as that country's renewal window just opened up. Once you get the passport renewed you can then quickly raise a case request and submit the new passport details. All the best !

Thank you so much for the well formed answer! We are actually planning to travel from India through this 'tiny' ;) country visiting wife's family for a few weeks and then further to Canada. They way you describe it i guess we can simplify everything and get the passport renewed in her country only, as long as we dont let the visa expire..

Thanks a lot! Seems like its easier than i thought it would be. Someone in a different, older post had said that if passport is renewed, you`d need to turn to CAN embassy to get the file transferred on the new passport and yada yada, so i got a little worried there. I guess its not completely false for those who cannot provide their old passports.

while applying for PR you may want to mention in your Letter of Explanation about your son's passport expiry & that once the embassy opens up for renewal you will do so & immediately update CIC with the new passport details on receipt. GL

Thanks, although i guess i wont be able to renew his passport while in India. The embassy is all crickets... no replies to emails even. Wifes pcc from same embassy is also taking already 5 weeks and no news.
