  1. You will need a TRV to get to Canada. If you come through the US or a Schenectady country first, you stand a very good chance of you claim being rejected. Refugees should claim in the first safe country they enter.
  2. You will need to wait about 2 years for your application to be processed to determine if you receive refugee status. During that time you may be eligible for some benefits, depending on which province you are in.
  3. You will most likely receive a work permit. Quite possible you will end up in a refugee “camp” (not quite a camp, more shared accommodations). The government wants you working and supporting yourself as soon as possible. Also looks better for your claim if you are attempting to integrate.
  4. Very minimal support depending on circumstances. Generally it’s not enough to live comfortably. They want you working as soon as possible. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?qnum=098&top=11

I think 4) only applies to government-assisted refugees, not ones that just turn up.

No anyone who doesn't have their own savings get welfare. That is one of the problems with current influx of refugee claimants. It is very expensive for the provinces.
