Best way forward - International student

Hi,

I am an international student from India currently pursuing a one-year PG Diploma program in Ottawa. My wife is here with me on an open work permit. I will complete my program in August. I wanted to know the best way forward to get my PR.

I believe my options are:
1) Get my one-year PGWP, get a job and apply for OINP through the International Student with a Job Offer Stream. And then once I get the provincial nomination, apply for EE. Would the one-year (or probably lesser) window be good enough to achieve all of this? That's my main worry. I have seen multiple threads but can't seem to get a proper timeline for this.

2) My wife is currently working and she will complete one year in March 2019. She can then apply for EE through the CEC route. To facilitate this, I can do another one-year program so that there's no break in her experience. What's the processing time for a CEC applicant?

Between the two options, which one would be advisable according to the experience of the members here?

You can't assume that the job you will get through PGWP will also get you a nomination from OINP because the job offer needs to be of indeterminate duration and jobs obtained through PGWP are usually temporary in nature. If an employer is willing to offer you a permanent job then it will also be the case that the employer would be willing to sponsor you for a work permit or a provincial program under OINP's employer driven scheme in which case your PGWP and consequently your previous diploma studies become irrelevant in this scenario and only be of use to you in so far as to accrue points under Express Entry profile (but again, almost anyone with a provincial nomination or a validated job offer would be invited for application despite any previously held low score).

2) My wife is currently working and she will complete one year in March 2019. She can then apply for EE through the CEC route. To facilitate this, I can do another one-year program so that there's no break in her experience. What's the processing time for a CEC applicant?

After gathering all necessary documentations and after being successfully invited to apply from the EE pool, 6-12 months..

Regarding the PGWP, I wanted help understanding a few more things. Is it a rare occurrence for international students to get permanent jobs under PGWP?

I might have a chance of getting a permanent job however since I am in the communications field, I am not sure that the organisation would field my candidacy under the Ontario Employers – Job Offer Stream or sponsor my work permit. And because of the nature of my field, I believe I won't get a job with a positive LMIA either.

In this scenario, I am hoping that I get a permanent job and then apply for OINP through the International Student with a Job Offer Stream. Do you think that that would work within the one-year window that I have with my PGWP?

1 year timeframe is usually unrealistic so many students end up doing a second degree.

It's not unusual for international students to be offered permanent jobs especially if they graduated from top schools or are qualified to work in regulated professions. Also don't underestimate the prospects of being sponsored for LMIA, while it's true employers would be hesitant to undergo this process for anybody, they might be willing to do this for select persons who have already worked for them under PGWP in order to retain them.

If you want to take the conservative approach you can take another year at school and go forward on your spouse's qualifications. Remember you can always apply to jobs at anytime you don't have to wait until you graduate.

Only a few has obtained PNP by having one year of PGWP. But the stress of not finding a job right after college which does not qualify for PNP or employers rejection of helping with PNP is quite stressful. Trust me I know since I also had one year of PGWP but I was lucky that my boss who i still work with now after i obtain PR helped me with PNP when I had only a few months left on my PGWP.

But I would still suggest to go for a 2 year program so you can obtain 3 years PGWP. Trust me you won't regret it.

Thanks for replying. I am currently at an internship and there might be a chance that I am offered a permanent job. But I am leaning towards the conservative approach considering some of the horror timelines I have been reading on this forum.

Thanks for replying. Getting the right job is a stress indeed. I am strongly considering doing another program unless I get the permanent job out of the internship that I am currently doing.

In your case, if you don't mind me asking, how did the PNP process work for you? Could you give me details about your timeline?

Apologies for the late response. She will qualify for PR once she completes a year and that's the route that we are planning to take. I am now doing a second program so that she can continue with her work. Let's see how it goes.
