Hi,
I have a Canadian PR with valid Indian passport which is expiring in 6 months. Due to some family reason I have to travel to India & come back in 4-5 weeks.

Someone told me there is rule that I should have passport with at least 6 month validity when travel to India or out of India.
To verify that I read online forum & most of the people saying, with Indian passport going to India there is NO validity requirement, even with 1 day validity Indian citizen can travel to India.
Also when coming back to Canada there should NOT be any issue as i have Canadian PR, even I can travel with Indian passport valid for 1 day.

Indian passport with 6 months validity requirement is only applicable if someone travelling out of India on Visitor visa, with Canadian PR there is NO problem.

Now if someone who had similar circumstances & traveled to India & come back to Canada, please share their experience. Any issue raised airlines or official at Indian or Canadian airport?

Thanks for your help!!

I have no experienced about this and other may give any input but my oppinion..
1. You are Indian passport holder so you can return to your country without any problem for direct flight except if you transit in one foreign country, you might get challenging
2. Enter Canada, No additional period of validity beyond this is required, but if your passport has less than 6 months validity remaining when you arrive in Canada it may take longer to pass through immigration control

1). But why there will be challenge if i have couple of hours layover at airport, i am not going out?
2). Also while coming back, why should be a problem since i have valid Canadian PR? Someone can live in Canada with expired Indian passport, as long as i have Canadian PR.

If i don't travel through USA then?
The reason i said Canadian PR as i heard immigration creates problem for passport less than 6 month if someone is going on Visitor visa. In that case they want to make sure person is not staying on expired passport. But in my case as i have Canadian PR, i can stay in Canada with expired Indian passport. Right?

There is no minimum passport validity requirement. You will be fine to travel.

There is no minimum validity rule but if you inquire Indian consulate they will not confirm anything. The only rule is you can not travel to foriegn country on visitor visa with less than 6 months passport validity. So it all depends on individual officer at the airport.
To be safer side get your passport renew. in my case i end up not travelling & now applying the new Indian passport.

Were you denied boarding at Indian immigration/Flight or you chose not to travel?

Currently working with an IT company on PGWP. Counterfoil is student visa with multiple entries.
Ohh ok. My case is bit different then I’m PR card holder.

I recently traveled(apr 22,2018-may 10,2018) to India with my passport being valid for 5 months only. I didn’t have any issues.

My port of entry was delhi so I asked the immigration about the passport validity less than 6 months, they told me apply when I go back to canada ( confirmed with 2 officers).

Point of exit was Hyderbad and they didn’t ask or say anything about passport validity.

Now I’m going to apply for new passport in Canada.

I cancelled all my bookings :(. Looks like it depends on the immigration officer, the flight to fly with. I called and contacted AirIndia several times and they kept saying 6 months policy BS. It's better to be safe than sorry, cuz If I get stuck Ill be stuck for long enough to jeopardize my job. Thanks for the answer though, Surya!

Hello Members, I have a question about passport validity. My parents got their immigrant visa stamped on 21-August-2018 at NDVO. Their passport expiry is 28-May-2019 and the visa is also valid until the same date. They are planning to come to Canada around end of March 2019. So when they fly to Canada, their passports will be valid only for two months. My plan is to get it renewed in Toronto after they land, however I have heard that the requirement is that the passport should be valid for minimum 6 months when you exit from India. Is that true? Would it cause any problems if they travel on the existing passport?
