Hello members;
I have a question about changing status from student to worker (open work permit) in Canada.
I have a study permit for one year in British Colombia for attaining secondary teacher certification. I wanted to know 2 things please:
1- Should I complete my study (1 year) to be able to get a work permit;
2- In case I finish studies, can I change my status from student to worker and stay in Canada?
Please kindly share if you know something.
Thanks in advance.

What type of work permit are u planning to apply? there are various work permits and have different requirements. If ur looking for a work permit after studying its post graduate work permit(PGWP) and u can only apply for it after the completion of ur course. If ur studying 1 year course u will get 1 year PGWP only there is no extension to PGWP so it is recommended u do 2 years of study and get 3 years of PGWP if u plan to apply for permanent residency.
Yes I"m going to study one year (familiarization programme for secondary school teachers). Do I understand that after graduation I have the right to work only for 1 year? what's the purpose of education then?

What kind of school are you going to? Never heard of a course like you are describing. Teachers in Canada attend teachers college. In order to get pgwp you should attend public college. Most private colleges don't qualify for pgwp.

if you planning to stay in Canada permanently, it's advisable for you to complete your schooling of 1yr and do another course of 1yr again making it 2yrs so you can get 3yrs of PGWP

If you decide to do a course of 1yr you get at least 8months/1yr PGWP which the timing MIGHT not be enough or right for you to apply for a PR

so think of your options before anything else

I am an international candidate to teacher certification in Canada (BC). I have been a conditional letter of acceptance to be a high school teacher. The condition is teacher training programme in Simon Fraser University or the university of british colombia for 1 year.

Are you implying that when my 1-year study permit expires I can apply for another course in Canada without going back to my country? is that possible?

Ok Iooked up the program. Good to know the program exists although I think it limits you teaching in BC. after you graduate you need to apply for a work permit (pgwp), There is a shortage of teachers in some areas and subjects in BC so you have a good chance of getting a job. The issues is that you still have to apply for PR like anyone else and having one full year of work in Canada is a requirement for one of the express entry programs. That is why people take a 2nd degree so they have 3 years to complete there 1 year of working and the apply for PR which takes around 6 months. PGWP can not be extended. Once it ends you would have get an employer to apply for an lmia and then you would have to apply for a closed work permit. I would suggest you do some more research into the various express entry programs.

yes, its feasible. It will be advisable you take up another 1yr course if you're not willing to return to your home country anytime soon so you can have a 3yrs PGWP, it will help you with a better chance when applying for a PR

Can I change my specialty, for example have a one-year training for some trade?
