I think that when it involves cheating money out from someone it becomes a crime. Adultery and emotional hurt etc is not.

But if you represent yourself to be something when you are not it can be a crime. For example there are those on Facebook who pose as someone they are not, get into a relationship with lonely men and women and then get them to send money to them etc.....is that a crime/scam?

One could argue that the original thread starter's husband is a scammer too. When it involves money.....crime....because the damage can be defined and quantified.
She agreed to marry him without coercion so it's not a crime. This is more a cultural issue. Unfortunately their are many men who have immigration status is the US, UK, Australia, Canada, etc who go and marry a woman through an arranged marriage in their home country and return home with the dowry money with no intention of sponsoring their wives. Unfortunately it becomes much harder for the woman to get married a second time.

This doesn't sound right to me. If clearly the intent was to marry, take the dowry and run, that has all the features of a well worked scam.

Rob, cheating is a crime. Otherwise what do you call those people who make calls impersonating CRA asking for money?
Cheating on a spouse is not a crime.
Not disclosing your past or lying about your employment to a fiancee/spouse, is not a crime.
Making empty promises to a fiancee/spouse, is not a crime (unless there was some written contract in place)
Asking a spouse for money, is not a crime.
Cancelling a sponsorship app, is not a crime.

The guy may be a jerk, but he really did nothing criminal according to Canada's laws. No idea about arranged marriage/dowry laws in India that is another story and would need to be pursued from within India, but since he's in Canada I doubt much if anything can be done.

Sounds like a good plan for Canadians to rip money off from women in India then.

Sigh. Canada is so lenient on crime. Sometimes I am amazed our crime rate isn't higher. I mean it pays to commit crime doesn't it? I sympathize with those rural land owners who keep getting robbed and the RCMP do little. Even if they arrest someone it is just a slap on the wrist.

.
Pretty sure it would be the same from US, UK, Australia, or any other country.

Plus the whole dowry system anyways seems to just be asking for potential fraud to happen, exactly as it did here.

Unfortunately the family likely only agreed to have their daughter marry the guy because of his immigration status because it doesn't seem like they knew much about him. Everyone likely had a vested interest in the marriage.

True. So a case of willing "buyer" willing "seller". LOL!

Sigh. Just a sense of injustice in me reading this. I know the laws has nothing on this.

The injustice is really that the man will be free to marry while the woman will likely be penalized because of the situation.

This is unfortunately a problem in most ex-pat communities where potential immigration is part of the marriage.
