I had to book my flight when my long estranged father whom I haven't seen for 15 yrs have contacted me and wanted to see his daughter... I just got hired at new company and it was tough getting 2 week vacation to come to Korea. I didn't even realize my pr card was expired and I applied for renewal with my immigration lawyer in December 2017. It should've come 1~2 weeks ago so I thought I would receive it before I have to return to Canada.
... Well it still hasn't come and I have to go back to Canada tomorrow... I need to arrive on May 1st to go back to work on May 2nd... I have renewal application receipt, expired pr card, proof of employment and also a proof of sponsorship for my husband because he got his pr by marrying me. We have a son who is a Canada citizen. I never left Canada for 8 yrs until now... I have all the tax information from past 8 yrs to prove that I lived in Canada for past 8 yrs without leaving the country. I was only in Korea for 2 weeks so didn't have time to apply for PRTD either... There is no place that issues it as Korea sends the documents to Phillipines. Takes too long...I don't have enough money to buy ticket to USA and drive to Canada either... It was tough for me to even come here in the first place. Just had to see my father for the first time in 15 yrs... I fly with Air Canada... is there any chance they will let me board? Do airlines pay fine for boarding pr without the card even if they pass through the custums? Or only when they get deported back? Please help...

Unfortunately, it's very unlikely that they will allow you to board the aircraft. They will require a valid PR card or PRTD to board you. Really, the only option is to travel to the US if you can't wait for the PRTD. For the airline, your tax history, proof of employment, PR renewal receipt, etc mean nothing. They simply work on a board/Don't board process that requires either a valid visa/eTA/PR card/PRTD. You can try your chances (given you have nothing to loose at this point) but don't be surprised if they refuse your boarding.

I appreciate your comment... I've read someone saying the staff at airline mannually overrode it and passed him through... is that at all possible or true?

(Devastated...) Is there really no way around? no chance they will allow me to board? .....I'm crying now...
There's almost zero chance they will let you board. If they do let you board - it will be a mistake.

As others have said, you need a valid PR card or PRTD to return to Canada directly. Otherwise you need to fly to the US.

There's no way around these rules.

I understand... but given the situation I really need to find some way to board today... What is the reason exactly? I know that the government says we need to carry PR with us but another lawyer has said that it's not the law and we should still be able to board... because we still are pr... Does the airline pay penalty even if I pass the custum no problem?

Do you have someone who can courier the renewed PR card (assume it's mailed to you) from Canada to Korea?

Sounds like the lawyer you spoke to isn't very familiar with current Canadian immigration rules...

Again, you won't be allowed on the plane unless someone makes a big mistake. Airlines are required to follow CBSA / IRCC rules with regards to travel document. You can always go to the airport and try if you are desperate. But make sure you have a back-up plan since you will most likely be denied boarding.

Don't think the renewed card has been received yet.

Since you won't have an eTA linked to your passport, the airline should demand to see a Canadian passport, valid PR card or PR Travel Document in order to be issued a ticket and allowed boarding. Technically an airline would be breaking serious protocol and Canadian rules, if they allowed you to fly without this. You can always go to the airline and try in person, though realistically you need to prepare for the fact you will most likely be denied a ticket.
Note also even if the initial airline check-in issued you a ticket, I believe you need to show a valid PR card again during the gate check so may be denied boarding at that time.

Unfortunately most likely you'll need to follow one of these steps to return to Canada:
1. Stay in Korea, apply for PR Travel Document and wait until it arrives
2. Wait until your PR card is mailed in Canada, and have whoever receives it courier it to you in Korea (assuming IRCC doesn't ask you to pick it up in person)
3. Buy a ticket to fly to USA, and drive back into Canada (at land border a valid PR card is not needed)

I heard if I sign a paper saying Air Canada has no responsibility etc they might let you board... is that true?

I think that is unlikely to be true or accepted. It seems to me that the previous posts contain all the information available.

No - there's no such process.

Again, you can certainly try to board - nothing stopping you from trying. Just make sure you have a plan B if you're refused and need to find another way home.

I've never heard of this before.
