Special circumstances -- applying from Quebec

Hi,

I would like to apply for permanent residence. I believe I am eligible for express entry but would like some feedback before I start the process.

I'm an Indian citizen and have a masters degree in physics from the University of Waterloo. After graduation, I have worked as a research associate for 6 months in Canada and 3 months in Germany. Once I graduate, I would like to live in Ontario but I am currently a Ph.D. student in Quebec.

My questions for you:

1. Does doing a Ph.D. count as work experience (as a research assistant) or does it mean I am a student?
2. During the course of my masters, I was a teaching assistant in several courses. Does this count towards work experience?
3. I worked as research assistant in France for 6 months while simultaneously being enrolled in a Ph.D. program here in Canada. Does that count toward my work experience?
4. Would I be eligible to apply for express entry?

Thank you!

PhD is considered a student thus the student visa. You will look if you qualify for PR yet but your work experience is less than a year. Certain provinces provide PR streams for PhD students. You are the one who knows your circumstances best so would look into the various PR streams. You will eventually qualify for PR but you may need to work for a year first.

The problem with provincial nomination is that it requires that I remain in Quebec. However, I would like to move back to Ontario when I finish my Ph.D. Ontario does not allow candidates to apply for PR from within Canada if they do not live in Ontario.

So you can't use the PhD stream route. Only you know what you are willing to do and sounds like you are capable of doing your own research. Remember you don't have to commit your life to one province, you can always move after a year.

Thank you, I have started collecting information. Is that one year a commitment? Do I have to stay in Quebec if I get a CSQ?
