Hello. I am planning to move back to canada (ontario) after my divorce here in the US (california) is final. I haven't filed any taxes in canada while i was away (7years) which made my SIN dormant. Im bringing two kids with me. My 7 year old who was born in canada and my 3 year old who was born in the US. I will be applying my 3year old his canadian certificate. Please help give me tips what i can do in advance, and what i should expect, as far as child tax benefits, my kids going to school, ohip, and among others.

Start the process to apply for your younger son's Canadian certificate asap. It can take a while. Also, I assume you have your ex-spouse's permission to move your children to Canada.

EDIT: For OHIP, you won't be covered until three months after you have returned. Make sure you take out private insurance to cover yourself for the first three months.

I will be sending the application tomorrow. I was told, the wait time is around 5 months. My target move is hopefully october. By then, my divorce should be final. Their father has agreed for me bring the kids. My other question is, what do i do with my SIN. I think it became dormant because I haven't filed my taxes for 7 years. How do i reactivate it and also what are the chances i'll be receiving any child tax benefits for my kids. I will be moving as a single mom and every bit helps.

You'll have to visit a service Canada office once you're here to reactivate your SIN.

You can apply for the child tax benefit once you've moved back to Canada (not before). Expect processing to take 2-3 months.
