Hello friends,

I have my citizenship ceremony in about 3 weeks from now in Surrey BC.
And I have a question regarding possible changes regarding BC ID card, BC provincial health card and Social Insurance Number, etc.

Will these be updated automatically to my new status of Canadian Citizen or I will have to contact each service concerned to inform them of my citizenship ?

I’d greatly appreciate your advice.

Thanks very much.

You get your permanent numbers when you become a Permanent Resident, they shouldn’t change when you become a citizen. At least your SIN will not change that’s for sure

I don't know about BC (and their website seems light on information), but Service Ontario indicates that the normal renewal period applies -- so no need to go in early -- and to bring in the citizenship certificate to document the new status when it's time to renew the card.

I assume your Canadian passport will be enough as you need to be citizen to get one.

That's probably fine.

However, ServiceOntario's instructions read "you will need three separate, original (not photocopies or printouts of electronic documents) identification documents" (emphasis theirs) -- one to prove citizenship, one to prove residence, one to prove identity -- which is why I mentioned taking the certificate. That way you can use your citizenship certificate as the first, driver's licence as the second, and passport as the third.

(Depending on which other documents you have easily available other combinations are possible, of course)

BC only wants two documents, so OP can just take a driver's licence (or BC Services Card) and a passport, and those will do just fine.

1. None of the above require that you inform that you are now a citizen.

What does citizenship have to do with any of those things? They are based on legal residency, not citizenship.

I’m asking because I thought those would be affected somehow by citizenship status mainly regarding expiry dates, ....
It’s always good to ask when you don’t know, right?
