Hi all.

So finally the stars have aligned and I will be moving to Canada on the 14th of March!!

Now, the only thing I still need is Medical Insurance and that brings up the following question:

1. Do I apply for 1 or 2 years?

My Dutch Passport expires only at the end of 2025 and I cannot find any information as to if Canada Border Services issues a 1 or 2 year work permit at the border. I am aware of the conditions they base the length of the work permit on (Medical Cover, Employment and Passport Validity) but I am afraid that:

- If I pay for one year of medical cover that the work permit is limited to 1 year while I could have had 2 or;
- I pay for two years and they only give me one based on various things such as which Nationality I have.

2. Also, I am looking to find out which provider of medical insurance is best value for money, as I have found a whole bunch of different quotes with different pricing but basic cover. I have taken all the deductibles into account as well, but would like to also be able to travel in and out of the USA. If any other Dutch Citizens have gone over before and were in the same boat as I was back then, please let me know how it went for you :p

Thanks!

Not sure about your question given Dutch nationals although they can qualify for 2x IECs , 1 as a working holiday visa and 1x Young professional employer specific. These will only be upto 12 months each time so not 2 years at all, just 2 years in total but separate applications.

So this a 2 separate participations and not 12 months followed by an extension of 12 months. At the border you will need a minimum 12 months travel insurance and will only get a max 12 month work permit for either category..

You could buy 2 years insurance up front but there could be a gap between a WHV finishing and getting a YP which is a challenge to even get a job sponsor . Plus for the second participation you would need to either leave and reenter or flagpole to activate it. Having 2 years insurance will make no difference as you will still only get a 12 month permit at the border for either a WHV or YP.

It is weird however because I read a while back that some countries qualify for a 2 year WHV striaght up?
