Please google and do your research carefully before landing. You need to first prioritize your accommodation. I suggest using Airbnb. I had a good experience with a temporary stay. Find "superhost" and try to stay under superhost since they are more experienced and reliable, and a safer fit for first time users like us. You can chat with the host about the nearby travel etc and clear all doubts. Once you land in Canada, use government services and check listings on Kijiji and Craiglist for long-term accommodation. Visit 4-5 homes at least before finalizing long-term apartment. Check for bed bug issue, rules of the house, heating, water, electricity issues before finalizing.

My suggestion would be to book temporary accommodation from India, come here and then search for a house. Airbnb would be the best option for temp accommodation. Airbnb, if you are not familiar, is mostly for short-term rentals, but I have noticed you can get month-long or even longer stay options. Another option would be a sub-lease say for a 3-6 months or so, your best bet to find a sub lease would probably be facebook groups, kijiji, craigslist.
Reason I say do short term accomadation initially is because in case you agree on somthing from India, come here and find it to be a crappy apartment, you would be stuck. But I must say short term options are pricey, an airbnb for a month could be pretty expensive in a big city.

I noticed that airbnb wont allow you to see the exact address of the location you want to rent until after you pay. I dont think this is fair
