Good afternoon,

We applied for my wife PR a few months back and she received her CSQ, passed the medical exam + sent Police certificate.
Today I went to apply for RAMQ as I thought we had everything required but the guy asked for some letter that sounded like the First-stage approval.

How long could it take to receive that approval after receiving the CSQ?

Thank you very much!

It currently gets first stage approval around 11-12 months. You need the AIP (approval in principle) letter. That letter will state:
"This refers to the Application for Permanent Residence you made under the Spouse or
Common-Law Partner in Canada Class.
It has been determined that you meet the eligibility requirements to apply for permanent
residence as a member of the spouse or common-law partner in Canada class. Please note that
a final decision will not be made until all remaining requirements for becoming a permanent
resident have been met.
"
Did you apply for an open work permit for your wife? and if yes, is she working full-time? If yes as well, I think she might be eligible as a worker. However, if no job, you definitely have to wait for AIP. Then you can register, but there will be anyway a 3-months wait before the coverage begins.

Thanks for the detailed answer Sylvain! :)

We applied Outland so she can't work at the moment.
So my understanding at the moment, considering the fact that we received the CSQ at the end of June, we still potentially have to wait 10 more months before receiving the Approval in Priciple?

No, I'm sorry, I took for granted that you applied inland. Outland timeline are quite different and usually faster than inland. You may try finding an outland thread related to the country of origin, there are several of them on this forum. People from such a thread would be much better to give you a more precise timeline.

Sorry to add a question here:

I have a medicare card here in Quebec which is set to expire this month (along with my IEC visa). I am currently pregnant (therefore not working right now)

I applied for PR back in October, got CSQ back in February and CIC recently asked for additional document. When I phoned CIC, they said that my medical and background checks are complete..and they are still reviewing my eligibility checks now.

Can I renew my medical card or not?

Hi Sylvain,

One question, do you know if my wife could be covered by the RAMQ having an open work permit, a full-time job, a csq, and a notification from CIC confirming that our application for permanent residence was received? Thank you

Yes, I know it's possible. I'm not sure of which documents are required, but I would presume she need a letter from her employer stating when she started to work and that she is currently working full-time. She will need to bring the CSQ and the current work permit. You can bring the AOR, but I don't think it will be considered for RAMQ. They will not grant coverage based on the ongoing sponsorship application (because she would need to reach the first stage of approval for that), they will grant coverage based on her status as a temporary worker. She will also need to prove she resides in Quebec province (lease contract or something similar). In the worse case, you can go with her and sign a declaration that your wife reside at (your address). This is actually what I did for my wife.

Hi there,

I have CSQ, Work permit, I applied inland, I just got a confirmation letter to go to school for French courses. The school asked for "Carte d’assurance maladie du Québec". So can I apply for the card? Or I have to wait until I have AIP like @syvain1 said?
