Well dear, it depends how you perceive it. Myself I am very inquisitive person and I wanted to know any details I can get about my application. So it helped in following ways.

1) I got to know my file transfer date from Sydney office to Missisauga.
2) Got to know my local visa office, it could be either Missisauga or St.Calir
3) I saw criminality check was completed but security check still in process and other requirements also still pending.
4) I got to know my file location which was test ready tagged
5) I saw they ordered ICES report for me which is CBSA report
6) Later on I saw the exact date when finger prints were ordered and date they received
7) I saw one concern also asking about employment

And some thing which I do not remember. But it did help me at least knowing above. Right now I have received my oath invitation so I am done.

And yes I forgot to mention I was late in getting test invite so wanted to know whats going on..

Test invite. 10 Nov 2017
Test date. 24 Nov 2017

Finger prints request. 27 Nov 2017
Finger print reached at IRCC. 08 Dec 2017

Decision made. 03 Jan 2018

Oath invitation 11 January 2018
Oath date. 2 Feb 2018

I requested mine on Dec 8, largely because I am curious too, and there was a clerical error in my PR card renewal about 8 years ago and I was curious to see if it was still in my file.

I am still waiting to get the info though... now more than 2 weeks past the service delivery standard.
