I actually came to Canada last May with the intent of getting married and applying for PR but I just told them I was here to visit. Anyway, when you've already entered Canada you can extend your stay via visitor extension program. The border officers are more comfortable knowing you have strong ties to your own country and wouldn't overstay.

I feel so bad for letting my lawyer send my application in December because I have no idea if CIC had received my application yet. I wanted to call my lawyer and ask for the tracking number, but my mother advised me not to do that as it would seem like I don't trust my lawyer.
All i know is that the mail was sent out between the 8-15 of December. How long should I wait to hear back from CIC saying that they've received my application? Please advise, I've been checking my email everyday like a lunatic .

Not necessarily as long as the sponsor has a stable job and is not dependent on any financial assistance from the government. Just have to show the requirement from the CRA: the latest tax assessment or the proof of income (option C).
I read that they first email the principal applicants then the sponsors. I just don't know if they always send emails to sponsors though. But I guess any sort of correspondence between the IRCC and either the PA or sponsor is a good start.

but from what I read they will email both. (Sponsor and the Main Applicant)
