Hello,

So my boyfriend and I have been living together for 6 months. It'll be a year in July. He is a student at U of T and I am a parking attendant. I make around 2200 every month but he doesn't have a job. He just works in the summer. I am on a post graduate work permit. We pay bills together for example, he pays the internet, i pay the hydro. We are on the lease together. We, however, have a roommate too, who is also on the lease with us, does that affect my chances of applying for permanent residence. Like i just want to what what are our overall chances?

Thank you very much

It's hard to say what your chances are. When you apply common law, it's about more than just living together for 12 months. You need to convince IRCC that you are truly in a marriage-like relationship. They will want to see things like: joint bank account, covered on each other's work benefits, beneficiaries on each other's life insurance, that kind of thing are all requirements that you will need to submit. Do you have that sort of proof? How long have you been together?

We do have joint bank accounts. We are not each others beneficiaries on the insurances because he has OHIP and i dont have insurance. But he have ample proof of our relationship such as family members, friends, texts, videos, pictures, call recordings etc.

I would go through the application checklist NOW to see what you have covered already.. The stuff you don't you have some time to work on it and getting the missing pieces. Come the one year mark you will be ready to just gather everything together and submit.

Note..videos and recordings are of no use and cannot be submitted.

Like Weegie said, I would review the checklist now and see where your gaps are. Based on this information I would say you probably have some. Of course they are interested that your relationship is real, but they are also interested to know it is marriage-like. Things like texts and conversations do not really show that, but the things they put on the checklist do. Common-law unfortunately is just a slightly more difficult route to go because you do need to provide more proof that your relationship is marriage-like since you are not actually married and they want to know the relationship is permanent if you are sponsoring someone into the country and will be responsible for them. So the burden of proof is high.
