Am I allowed to apply for an LMIA if I want to hire a live-in caregiver who is also a family member but not an 'immediate family member'?
If the LMIA is approved, will the work permit of said family member be rejected simply because they are a family member?

Does that family member meet the caregiver requirements (i.e. work experience, education)?

Short answer is that it's possible - but can be more difficult. Some are certainly approved.

What is the education required for a caregiver? I was told high school was enough or do they need to have a bachelors degree in a specific subject?
What potential difficulties are you thinking of?

Caregivers must meet one of the following requirements: (1) have 1 year of full time paid work experience in the caregiver or a related occupation in the last three years; (2) have 6 months of full time education in a caregiver program or related in the last three years.

High school is technically enough education. However if you're hiring a family member who only barely meets the minimum requirements, CIC can sometimes question why you aren't picking someone more qualified and refuse for this reason (i.e. say you're doing it primarily to bring that person to Canada).

But again, people are approved.

Website says the Live in caregiver program is closest?? Does that mean the whoLe program is cancelled or is there a replacement program?

The Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP) is closed to new applicants. If you don’t already have a LCP work permit and would like to work as a caregiver in Canada, you must apply for a regular work permit.
