NOC of studies and NOC of work experience are not the same, is that a problem?

Hello everyone,
Could you help me out? I have studied for Urban Planning and Management which has the NOC 2153. Back home I have worked as a GIS specialist/technician which has the NOC 2255. Would that be a problem in my application? Would my work experience not be taken in consideration?

There is such a thing as 'NOC of studies'. The NOC classification is for jobs based on the duties and responsibilities. In addition, your work and education don't have to match. So, there is no problem in applying under NOC 2255 if that is what you were doing in your job. Good Luck!

First of all, NOC being a classification of occupations does have, apart from main duties, employment requirements section just below for every NOC. EE profile also asks when one was first qualified for the job being filled out. So your question is valid.
Secondly, no one has reported on the forum or elsewhere that the application is rejected because education & NOC don't match.

Having said that, your field of education and job is quite close to each other. I would be worried if I was a mechanical engineer working as a software architect. As a general rule of thumb, I would fill in the date of university graduation for "when were you first qualified for this job" question regardless of the noc.

Although there is a section for employment requirement foe each NOC, IRCC clearly state that you don't have to match those since they are just guidelines.

Note: The applicant does not need to demonstrate that they meet the “employment requirements” listed in the NOC occupational description." ​

Appreciate the posting of the source link so that everyone stays informed. It was never my contention that they have to match. Just that Employment requirements is a thing, in addition to the EE profile question "when were you qualified to perform this job" that applicants are expected to answer in good faith.
