Hi everyone,

I'm a British self-employed musician (guitarist/singer with a degree in music) and online English teacher (certified and teaching from my own website). I really want to move to Canada with my long term Chilean girlfriend who's an actress, yoga instructor & Spanish teacher, and would be coming as common law partner.

I want to apply as self-employed, but as the application fees aren't cheap, I wanted to get an idea of what kind of chance we would have of being granted visas? I appreciate that there's no way of knowing with this, but it's really hard to get a gauge of how successful musicians are in the visa applications, and I was hoping someone here might know other musicians or artists with a similar background who have applied in the past?

Thanks in advance for your time and feedback!

To qualify as a musician - you must be considered "world class" - meaning your name or your work must have global recognition (e.g. multiple well selling albums released, extensive touring either within your own country or abroad, be a composer people recognize by name and who is sought out, etc.). Do you meet this requirement?

Note that processing times for the self-employment class tend to be extremely long and it tends to be difficult to be approved. I would recommend you go with the Express Entry program instead if you qualify and have sufficient points.

Hi Scylla,

Thanks so much for your response, it's very helpful! Wow, given how many self employed musicians there are out there that don't fit those requirements, it's surprising to see, but good to know nonetheless - looks like I'll be going for the express entry!

Thanks again!

Well, I know of cases of successful Self-employed immigration for musicians that didn't fit that description (extensive touring, selling albums etc.).
There are certainly other ways to show you're a good, capable professional.
