At what point do you apply to extend your stay past 6 months, and how?

You can apply for a visitor status extension online. Through your mycic account.

While you can technically do it anytime they advise it is pointlss to do so too early..

They do officially advise you to do it 30 days before your current status expires but in reality you can do it right up until the day your status expires.

I have applied online on the "29th" with status expiring "30th" with no issues.

Yes - you have implied status until a decision in the extension is made.

As scylla said yes you do. But you must apply for the extension before your current status expires to be "implied".
