Sponsorship and Visitor visa

I would greatly appreciate any insight into my issue. I have 9years left on my visitors visa. I flew back into Canada in September 2017 to be with my wife (Canadian citizen) for xmas and extra touring. I applied for my PR in May 2017. I was wondering whether I need to write to immigration to notify them that I would like to stay longer in Canada as my pr gets processed and tour more regions or is it ok to stay without notifying them since I have a 9yr visitors visa. Im confused as the laws say I can only stay for a period of six months for every visit. Is it for visas that are for 6months or for every stay?

Please advise anyone and happy new year

How long can I stay in Canada as a visitor?
A border services officer at the port of entry in Canada will determine how long you can stay in Canada. Most visitors are allowed a six-month stay from the day they entered Canada (regardless of the validity of the visitor visa, i.e., even if valid for 10 years). If the officer authorizes a stay of less than six months, they will indicate in your passport the date by which you must leave Canada.

If you want to stay longer than your authorized stay, you should apply for an extension at least 30 days before the authorized end of your stay.

Good Luck!

The regular stamp would mean the maximum stay of 6 months was given.

When I head over to extend my stay and do the fill out eligibility questionnaire, it tells me I am eligible to apply for PR which I already did in May 2017.

Just ignore that.

You need to answer the questions as a visitor, not someone intending to remain in Canada permanently.

It is way too early for you to apply for an extension. Wait until few weeks before your current status expires.

Thanks for the clarification everyone. Really appreciate it. One last question, in my cover letter to extend my stay should I mention I have a PR application in process. Is being honest a good/bad thing?

You don't need a cover letter. The form asks why you want the extension, so you state there that you have a sponsorship app in process. Include proof of the PR app, such as sponsor approval or the fee receipt.

Hello,
Since you have been here since September, you shouldn't extend for a while longer. Typically if you don't get stamped, that means you can stay for 6 months. It is recommended you apply approx 30 days before your status ends (so apply 5 months into your stay) especially if you are applying through paper. You can apply up to the very last week, or even day you lose your status technically. Just reccomended you apply 20-30 days before your status ends.

Oh nice info. We are applying online and most probably sticking to the laws of atleast 30days before expiry. I have read the website back and forth seems all points to being sent a visitor record of sort. Besides the PR application in process we have had two miscarriages and since my wife is being monitored by a doctor, we were advised to retry after 2 months of the last miscarriage which is mid this month. so i am abit confused of how to say all these reasons because they are all genuine of why I need to extend my stay. also on the form do I specify the correct duration of how long i would want to stay or stick to applying for a 6months extension only.

Please advise

There is no 30 day law; you can apply up until your status expires.

Just put that you are waiting for your sponsorship app to be processed. Ask for a year.
