Can I change my application later and add spouse?

Dear All,

I am new to this forum and I am also not familiar with FSW Express Entry application process. I have a question:

I want to apply for Express Entry as married with spouse as accompanying and see if I get an ITA, and later if I don't get selected I want to change the application to the married but non-accompanying spouse. My score with accompanying spouse is 442 and non-accompanying spouse is 469. After entering Canada I will apply for her PR if I say non-accompanying on Express Entry application.

Once I say spouse is accompanying, later can I make changes to my application to spouse non-accompanying or vice-versa? Or will it be considered as cheating if I say married and spouse as non-accompanying just to achieve a higher score?

Thanks in advance for your help!

You can edit your profile at any time and you are free to add your spouse as non-accompanying.

Be aware though that even if he/she is non-accompanying your spouse still needs to do the medicals and provide police certificate(s). Also, you would have to sponsor your spouse later once you become a PR which can take up to a year.

Thanks for your quick response. I am only going to change the application to married - non-accompanying spouse to get a higher score. We are willing to compromise to stay apart for some time at the expense of getting my PR and eventually get her PR. But before we do this we just want to apply as married and spouse as accompanying and test our luck.

Another question is, can I change to the spouse as accompanying later if I start application as the spouse as non-accompanying now?

You can but if you do so after receiving an ITA your points would get recalculated so be careful.

Yes but that brings the usual debate in this forum regarding misrepresentation of your intentions. Thus, I will refrain from commenting on such topic.

Okay, I didn't read through the forum for such questions yet. I don't want to fall into that category so I will call my spouse only by sponsoring her separately after I arrive in Canada if I get my ITA based on married - non-accompanying spouse points. I hope this is not misprepresentation, right?

And is it not seen as a misrepresentation of intentions if I change my application later to the non-accompanying spouse from accompanying spouse to achieve higher points before the draw itself?

1 - Yes, that is not misrepresentation.
2 - No issue if done before the draw.
