Timing for application

Hello everyone,

I came to Canada in August, 2013 and have completed my Ph.D. from a Canadian University in August 2017. In these 4 years, I have worked as a Teaching Assistant in the University. At present, I am working as a post doctoral researcher for past 4 months and have been planning to apply for PR. However, I am not sure about when to apply. Should I wait for a year in order to accumulate more points on the basis of my employment?
Also, I have my wife here with me on open Work Permit. What would be the best option if we want to apply together. Any suggestion is appreciated.

Where did you study? If it was in Ontario, you might be eligible to apply through the Ontario PhD stream.

Otherwise, you will need to gain at least one year of post-graduation work experience (meaning, work on a work permit, not a study permit) for it to count as "Canadian" work experience. You might be eligible to apply now if you also have at least 1 year of foreign work experience in a skilled NOC.

If you are married, it is not optional whether to include each other on a PR application - it is mandatory. The one who is eligible and/or has the highest CRS score (CRS=Comprehensive Ranking System) should be the "Principal Applicant" (PA), and the other is a "dependent" on the application form. Depending on how much work experience your wife has, she may be eligible to apply right now as principal applicant (and in that case, you would be the dependent).

Thanks so much for your response. I did my study in Ontario, however, I don't have foreign work experience for at least 1 year as skilled NOC and my wife (my dependent) has 10 months experience now

Do not confuse the two programs. The Ontario Immigration PhD stream is NOT express entry, it is a traditional PNP application and does not have a work experience requirement. I am not certain if it is currently open, Ontario Immigration opens and closes it several times a year to manage the volume of applications, but it will likely re-open soon enough.

Express Entry covers three skilled worker streams (FSW, CEC, FST). Please do yourself a favor and read the info on the IRCC website, so that you know the difference between the three programs.

It sounds like your wife is only 2 months away from qualifying under the CEC program (if she is working in a skilled occupation), in which case she could be the Principal Applicant (and you would be the dependent, for the purpose of the application).
