Do my kid need a Canadian passport when we travel from US to Canada by car?

Where is the Find Out page? As i am after more info on this-

I am in a similar situation where my daughter was born in Australia last year but has a Canadian born father. We are planning to visit Canada next month and my daughter has an Australian passport and an approved ETA. Since we havent applied for her proof of Canadian citizenship I am assuming she can travel on her Australian passport and ETA as it is valid?

Hi

Your child is Canadian and therefore doesn't qualify for an eTA. The previous poster obtained an eTA for their child by basically lying in the eTA app and not stating the child's Canadian citizenship.

If your child is under the age of 2, the better option is to submit a Certificate of Citizenship app and then concurrently apply for a limited validity Canadian passport. With proof of travel, the passport can be issued within days.

Thanks for your reply! Limited validity passports are currently taking 30 working days. More time than we have.

Submit an urgent request.
Urgent requests only apply to death or serious illness as per the website.

Regardless of my situation, it just seems absurd that if you have a baby aboard, they have to wait 12+ months to take a quick holiday in Canada. Yet other Australian/UK babies could go tomorrow.

They really need some sort of provision for infants.

I ended up emailing Immigration Canada and since my child was born in Australia and hadnt been registered as a Canadian citizen she could enter Canada on her Australian passport with an ETA travel visa. She doesnt need a Canadian passport until she is registered as a Canadian citizen. Hope that helps. I'll see if i can find the email response I received as i can give you the same email to contact if you would like it i confirmed. We travelled to canada a few months ago and had no issues at all with her Australian passport and visa.
Enjoy your trip! :)

Not quite sure what you mean. They have such a provision and we have been speaking about it - the limited validity passport that is issued on the basis of a submitted Certificate of Citizenship app.

You are completely incorrect and out of line Canuck in the UK i did not lie on my child's ETA application which was approved and I contacted immigration Canada and border agency and they both confirmed IN WRITING that my child could use her Australian passport and approved ETA as she is not considered Canadian until we apply for her citizenship. We have since visited Canada where my child had no problems and i spoke to the Immigration officers when i was in CANADA and they said the ETA was approved because she is not yet considered Canadian as we havent applied for it. So maybe check your facta before you accuse a stranger of lying!

Just hope you disregard Canuck in the UK as they have no clue. Contact Sydney Immigration like I did and they will reassure your ETA is valid and honest- ;)

Why don't you submit a proof of Canadian citizenship. Once you get it, it will say that the child has citizenship since child's birthday. So canuck is correct. The child is born Canadian BY LAW, whether you like it or not. Technically the child shouldn't be able to apply for ETA since the child is Canadian. But with our government, it is not 100% proof free since your Canadian child has slipped in the crack and was able to get ETA despite Canadians not allowed to qualify for ETA.

You are out of line and have clearly not done your research - nor do you know my situation as I am not Canadian and never have been, nor has my child. We did not 'slip through any cracks' as everything we did was in line with Canadian law by calling the relevant Canadian authorities and received confirmation in writing from Immigration Canada before we visited LEGALLY. Please read some of the posts above from reasonable people who have said the same thing. Try calling Canada Immigration and you will get the same response- if no application has been made for citizenship then they can enter on their own passport with their approved travel visa.

Your child was Canadian from birth. There is no "registering for Canadian citizenship". She was a Canadian when you applied for the eTA but you didn't declare it in the app. Dual citizens, which your child has been since birth, are required to travel on their Canadian passport.

Let me ask you this. Did you or did you not declare your child's canadian citizenship in the eTA application for child? If you did, your child was one of those who fell in the cracks and gotten eTA when child should have not been issued one. If you did not declare it your child has gotten eTA through misrepresentation. Regardless if you intentionally omit the child's Canadian citizenship or you made a mistake in not declaring it, it is still misrepresentation. The child was not born prior 1977 whereby you had to register the child for citizenship. The law as of now your child was Canadian the moment he/she was born. No registration is required. Only proof of citizenship (apply for canadian certificate) was required since the child ALREADY had it since BIRTH.
