I want to visit my boyfriend in Canada.
I would like to apply for a visitor visa based on his invitation.
Please let me know if it is mandatory to buy a flight ticket when applying for a visitor visa or a flight reservation will work as well?

No, it is mandatory. You can get a TRV without a flight ticket.
