I got my COPR recently and planning to land soon. My question is can i land in Canada & depart within 2 days ? ( as i have to get married soon after that). Will it cause any problem if i take this route ? Is there any condition that i have to stay for for few weeks for completing any other formality other than collecting my PR ?

Hi, It is possible. While you land, you will need to provide an address that you should receive your PR card after 6-8 weeks. You may leave as soon as after landing. For next entry, it is mostly possible with PR card and some one should send you that card.

However, i will suggest few things before you leave back if you are planning to permanently reside in canada later.. applying for SIN, Bank accounts etc is suggested to be completed when you land for first time. You may need 3-5 days for all the process.

Anoop - From where can I find all the activities that one needs to fulfil if (s)he wants to live in Canada permanently?
Like you mentioned SIN & Bank Accounts. What other things are needed to be taken care of?
How do I find all that info - Any online link or website for that?

I got details from some websites and based on my personal experience and advice from my close friends over in canada. I did below things in one week:

1) Opening SIN for me, spouse and child. If you are landing at day time you could do this from airport itself. Else you need to go to service canada centres. I did like this. Approx 1-2 hours activity.
2) Opening bank account in your name. Just COPR and passport needed. (ofcourse if you have SIN available before that, its good). You could have debit cards and they will give credit cards too with some credit.
3) Take a mobile number - You need to have SIN for that.
4) After receiving the mobile bill to your address, you could use that as well for your health card registration. The coverage starts after 90 days only.

These are the basic things to complete before establishing as far as I under stand :)

Thank you Anoop. I am afraid your answers opened doors to few more questions. Please suggest on below queries.

2. Any particular bank you suggest that is good in Service or No. of branches/ATM ? I have account in ICICI here.
Considering I have account in ICICI -
  • How should I show my funds proof at the airport if asked? Will my Indian ICICI bank statements work considering the amount will be in INR?
  • Around how much funds in CAD do I need to carry with me while travelling from India to Canada?
  • What are the modes with which I can travel with foreign currency from India. I have heard about international debit cards or travel cheque. Not sure about them and any other mode.
  • How will I get my INR in my ICICI bank transferred into CAD (into Canadian Bank)? Do I need to contact Indian ICICI bank to get my funds transferred to Canada Bank or will Canadian Bank do it on my behalf?
4. Do I need to have a post-paid mobile number? Will a rented accommodation or shared accommodation work for the address proof?

1) TD is the bank suggested by my friend, as it has many branches and it has many of its own ATMs. However, i do created for another bank as well for my spouse.

2) How should I show my funds proof at the airport if asked? Will my Indian ICICI bank statements work considering the amount will be in INR?
Yes, a latest bank statement shoudl suffice. However, you can even get a letter from bank manager saying that the amount in your account is worth so and so CAD. I traveled from UK. I took my bank statement from UK and had some from India too. However, nothing was asked. Rare chance for them to ask these things at airport

3) Around how much funds in CAD do I need to carry with me while travelling from India to Canada?
Depends, i carried less only as i planned to stay there for 1 week only. Also i stayed with my friend only.

4) What are the modes with which I can travel with foreign currency from India. I have heard about international debit cards or travel cheque. Not sure about them and any other mode.
You could carry cash, if its less than 10000 CAD. However, carry some in cash and have an international travellers card or cheque to be on safer side.

5) How will I get my INR in my ICICI bank transferred into CAD (into Canadian Bank)? Do I need to contact Indian ICICI bank to get my funds transferred to Canada Bank or will Canadian Bank do it on my behalf?
Once you open CAD bank acocunt, they will give wire transfer details when you mention that you have some amount to transfer. You could use this method, or you could use normal transfer methods from bank or other agencies like transferwise etc. I dont think that you need to contact any one for this.

6) Do I need to have a post-paid mobile number? Will a rented accommodation or shared accommodation work for the address proof?
I took a postpaid number only as its cheaper and i needed the credit history to start building. Accommodation, that should be ok, provided you gave that address for your SIN. If you have any friends address, give that as base address every where, but you can stay any where.

All answers from my knowledge and experience and just for guidance.
