3 months health insurance for new immigrants to Ontario

Hi there,

I am looking for a private health insurance for my partner and me for a duration of 3 months. We are both new immigrants to Ontario with a PR.

I read previous threads and I compared some insurances on the following website : https://arbetovinsurance.com/new-immigrants-canada-insurance/

I request your help on some points :

1. I had a look at various plans and I can't find benefits about basic care like consulting a family doctor for a cold or any illness. Is that included in "Hospitalization benefits" ?

2. Regarding drugs prescription, how does that work in Ontario ? You go to the family doctor who give you a prescription and then you can buy the drugs in a drug store ?

3. For specialized doctors (eyes doctors, gynecologist, physician, osteopath..) where do you need to go ? Is that included in new immigrants insurance ?

4. Among the following insurances, which ones would you suggest :

1. You can't find it because it isn't covered. You will have to pay out-of-pocket for regular doctor visits.

2. Yes, that's how prescriptions work.

3. All out-of-pocket.

You are basically purchasing emergency coverage. You will need to pay for all of the other stuff until you have OHIP.

Routine check-ups and consultations are not covered under any Visitors to Canada / New Immigrants insurance plans. Yet, if it is related to a medical emergency i.e. flu, fever, infection, physical injury or any other sickness / accident, this insurance will cover the expenses.

As for prescription drugs, when there is a medical emergency event (something that is unforeseen and require immediate medical attention) and a doctor writes down a prescription for a certain medicine, the costs you pay for that medicine will be reimbursed to you by the insurance company up to the benefit limit (each insurer has their own limit for such benefit).

Visits to medical specialists (from your list) are not covered by any of these policies.

If you are looking for something inexpensive that does offer comprehensive coverage, Destination Canada would be a good option to go for. The don't automatically charge you for pre-existing medical conditions coverage (unless you select to have it), which lowers their premiums significantly.

On the other hand, Allianz would offer more coverage and they cover stable pre-existing medical conditions treatment. It is an internationally recognized name with a vast network of health care providers across Canada that know this insurance.

Seriously, it's 3 months you're talking about. Just get a typical emergency travel medical plan to cover you for the 3 months, and simply don't go to these kinds of specialists under after you're covered under the provincial healthcare. Unless you have some crazy pre-existing conditions anyways, you most likely won't need any of them for anything urgent.

Have you gone any further in your research since then? Did you finally select something?

Like any normal travel insurance policy. No card for a short term policy just a policy confirmation.
