Hi, I'm applying for permanent residency through common-law sponsorship with my girlfriend, and I'm hoping to include letters from friends and family as recognition of our relationship. I already have some people willing to provide these letters, but I'm not sure what to tell them to write, what would be the best format for these letters? do they need to go into much detail? what kind of things should be covered and who should they address it to?

Thanks in advance!

Dan

Hi Dan!
I did commonlaw sponsorship Outland as well.
We had a ton of friends and family write letters.
Basically you need to prove your relationship is valid, genuine, and continuing.
So just tell this to you friends and family.
And tell them to write it from their point of view.
Including experiences. Opinions of your spouse when they met them. Opinions of the relationship.

We had everyone sign it with their names, address, and contact info as well. Since we couldn’t notarize all of them.

If you’re still not sure. Feel free to message me and I’m more than willing to send you a nice example of one of ours. Or if you have any other questions.

Take care!

We have yet to submit our application, but this is what I asked friends/family to include:

-current date
-your full name
-how we know each other/are related, how long you've known me
-month/year you met (my partner) and the circumstances of how you met
-acknowledge that you have known (my partner) and I to be in a committed relationship since (date), and living together continuously since (date)
-any other information about us..this will help these letters to look more personalized. things such as: if we've been on a holiday together, celebrated a special occasion together, anything else you can think of
-please sign the letter & include a copy of ID (drivers license) to show that the signatures match/prove your identity
-please provide a contact # or email for yourself

Obviously I asked everyone to format it as they pleased, and told them not to worry too much about length etc. I don't think it's necessary to go into too much detail, it's more to provide support your relationship is genuine and is recognized by friends/family. Everyone just addressed "To Whom It May Concern". Hope this helps.
