Hi all,

I'm currently a student in my last year of studies applying for PR through the common-law inland option. I am also planning on submitting documents for my open work permit along with the PR application. I just want to know if this will exhaust my current study permit status? Or is it possible to hold an OWP and study permit side to side until PR is granted?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Heyoo,
I was in the same situation and now have an OWP (valid for 2 years) and a study permit (expiring end of 2017). So yes, it is possible.
Hope that helps.

Hey! Thanks for the reply. May I ask what class (inland, outland and common-law or married couple) you applied your PR in? I am hearing that OWPs are only given for a term of one year, I'm curious to how you got 2 years. Thanks!

Now you made me double check my permit, but I can confirm it is 2 years. I applied inland, common-law. I have started working and switched to part-time studies. I am in the latter stages of a PhD and just need to get some writing done. Now, I will need to do some research to ensure I can extend my study permit to continue part time studies - I assume so but I need to make sure. If worst comes to worst I plan on finishing my degree once I am a PR.

Thank you for the reply. I would be slightly cautious on the matter of taking part-time studies while on a study permit. Since you have not been granted PR status as yet, it is technically a violation of your study permit conditions to study part-time. I will let another member on the forum verify this though.
