Hello all,

I'm inquiring on behalf of my Mother. She was born in Australia in 1954. Her father was Canadian. She moved to Canada in 1966. She has "Landed Immigrant" status. Back in 2006, she applied for permanent residence, although it has since expired. She has no idea what she needs to do to become Canadian and neither do I.

Can she simply apply for citizenship by descent?

1. Yes, it would appear so, if her father was either born in Canada or received his citizenship by naturalization (not descent) prior to her birth, then she just has to apply for proof of citizenship. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/proof.asp
2, Note, you will not be eligible for citizenship by descent as you would be the 2nd generation born abroad. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/proof.asp

Thank you!

Regarding myself though, I'm a Canadian as I was born here. I actually have Australian citizenship too (by descent). Win win for me! Just need to help my Mother finally get her Canadian citizenship now, 51 years later. Hah!
