Hi All,
I know there are tons of threads on this topic in the forum but I want to start a new discussion for those who plan to leave Canada after they mail their application under the new roles.

I know the CIC clearly mentions, yes you can but taking in mind that you have to maintain the PR status till you give the Oath.
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?qnum=911&top=5

In my case,
  • I mailed my application under new roles and it is delivered today (Oct 16, 2017).
  • My eligibility period is from October 2012 to October 2017. I got the PR in October 2014
  • Last five years, 30-40 days of travels outside the country.
  • October 2012 to October 2014; Study Permit and live in Canada.
  • October 2014 to October 2017; Permanent Resident and live in Canada.
I am planning to move for a job in the United States later in the new year 2018.

So, my questions are:
  • You think guys this is okay? no risks? The point is the job offer I have in the US is very attractive for me and I doubt I will get a similar one if I wait in Canada for another 12-16 month till my application is approved. However, I will be nervous in the US till I get my application approved.
  • I know I have to update CIC with my new address and also if I am leaving Canada for more than 2 weeks. So this is okay to send to CIC that I am traveling to US for a year? I can provide them with an alternative Canadian Mailing Address.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Okay I will bite.
I believe you will be fine. In case they ask for more info in the form of RQ or something, you might have to provide some extra proof of residency.
Update CIC when you move but wait until you get AOR. If you are still working in Canada at the time of your interview, then you are golden. If not, maintain your mailing address to make sure you dont miss anything. Call CIC and ask how to update you info.

In my case, I applied just like you. I fulfill the eligibility requirements easily. Have been in Canada for more than 10 years now. Also wife is Canadian so PR status will not expire. I am going to be moving to the US for work in november even before getting AOR. I am expecting RQ because of this. However I am not worried since I have ample proof of residency and work in Canada for the last 5 years. Although I am considering consulting a lawyer for advice on what to expect and how to update IRCC properly about the move.

Thank you for your inputs. If you will consult a lawyer, please let us know his recommendations to help us.

I have just some thoughts. So, in terms of residency, CIC ONLY CARES about the eligibility period, nothing after or before as long as I maintain the PR??

As I mentioned, I was in Canada almost continuously from 2012 to 2017 and I can easily prove that (TAX return, job letters, university transcript, etc). Even though I might move to US after I apply, I believe there should be no risk in getting the citizenship as long as my eligibility period is clear?? In my case, I am claiming 4 years out of 5 and I have already lived in Canada 3/5 so my PR is not in risk as well. So again, I think as long as this period is clear CIC has nothing to do? these are the rules they placed in force and they should follow them.

Yes, for the purpose of citizenship grant, you have to provide evidence that you meet the criteria that they asked for. If you meet them, you should get the grant.
Living/working outside of Canada is frowned upon for two reasons:
- There are people who took advantage/lied/misled IRCC in the past by living abroad/not fulfilling minimum requirements and claiming they did. So IRCC is rightfully cautious in cases where applicant claims to be already working abroad.
- the addition of "intent to reside" clause by the Harper government in 2015 meant this was very hard to justify/prove if you are not in Canada.

Now with C6, there is "no intent to reside". You do not need to prove that you will be living in Canada forever, only that what you claim is true and verifiable.
If you have the required proof, and you do get criminally charged for some reason anywhere in the world, you should be fine. Just be prepared to get RQ and the multiple trips for test, oath, RQ, hearing etc.

There is no risk to your citizenship! You are risking some delay and a lot of anxiety...

Inform CIC only after your travel plans have been finalized. Once your application goes to back burner, it might stay there for a long time! In my opinion, you should think more in terms of logistical questions like:
  • Do yo have someone trustworthy enough to check your Canadian mail
  • How fast can you come to your Canadian co-location for interview and oath
  • Can you come to some understanding with your employer for possible recuses to finish Canadian citizenship formalities
Hope this helps!
