Citizenship By Birth

Dear All,

I know the subject is quite old and maybe redundant through the forum but we would like to make sure of that.

My wife s 6 month pregnant and we are planning to go to canada for the delivery of baby. We have just a tourist visa and no permanent Residency neither canadian citizenship.

Is my child will be Canadian citizenship automatically? Some of the rumors and post are saying that the law has change concerning that citizenship by birth.

If yes how long will the procedure take ??

Any advice on that matter concerning any particular private insurance to take or the hospital to go to would be more than welcome.

If you give birth here the child gets to be a citizen. You need to google especially the city you want to be in at the time. Call hospitals to find cost. Maybe in 3 months or less. You only need ceritifate from the hospital to apply

others can comment but whilst yes any baby born in Canada will be a Canadian citizen there is never any guarantee that as visitors you would be allowed into the country for enough time pre and post birth especially if CBSA at the border suspects that is the reason at 6 plus months for your visit as opposed to being genuine visitors.

Also be prepared to spend 5-10k CDN for the birth and even more if any complications given travel insurance would not cover anything at all for the birth neither I suspect will you be able to get any other insurance.


Cannot comment on how long it will take to get the baby’s first passport but you should still assume that needs to be within your authorised stay in the country unless you apply to stay on as a visitor. Plus of course having a Canadian passport the assumes your home country is visa free for a Canadian or if you need to apply to return.

Birth tourism can be a pretty contentious issue with some people.

Pretty sure that if you have an epidural it will be closer to 10k. C-section maybe 20K. Any stay in the NICU could cost a fortune. Not a fan of birth tourism myself. I hope that at least the hospital bills have to be paid before they can apply for passport. Birth tourism at the Canadian taxpayer's expense infuriates me.
