Being in PR Pool: when should you start preparing medical and background checks?

Hello everyone,

I joined the express entry pool about a month ago. I'm also applying for a provincial nomination so that it can boost my score.

From what I understand, the provincial nomination can take up to 3 months (which means I have about 2 months left for an answer from them).

When should I start preparing/booking the medical check and background check?

I heard that the background check can take longer than 30 days, so they ask to "prepare it in advance" before you receive an invitation. But how long in advance? (especially since you never really know when you're gonna get invited once you're in the pool)

The thing that worries me the most is that I don't know which "expiration date" those things have. Which means that, what if I pay for those checks, then I don't get invited immediately for some reason, and then I'll have to pay for them again?

it depend on how many and where your PCC are from. I can get mine done in 1 day, for the FBI it takes a while etc.... Medicals are easier to book. you have time from when you get invited.
What's your CRS score for now?

I've been working in Canada for over a year. My wife and I are both from different countries.

So, will we need to get those checks from our home countries? Or from Canada?

I once had to get one from my country, and it didn't take too long (just required to send a power of attorney letter and a family member picked it up after a couple of days or so). But my wife's country may take longer.

I don't have access to my CRS score right now, but it's not super high (basically, I don't think I'll get invited until the provincial nomination goes through).

you have to get a PCC from every country you were more than 6 months in (6 months doesn't have to be continuous, if you went to a country 6 times for one month each for example you will have to get a PCC from that country)

Well yes. My recommendation to you is to head to the website and read everything you should be doing. Otherwise it'll cause you a lot of delays and problems once you get ITA. There's a lot you need to double check and read about.

My impression about your post is that you don't even aware if this site: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/security/police-cert/intro.asp

P/S: There are other important info on CIC website. You should check it out immediately.
I've checked that website. Thankfully it says they are valid for 6 months, so I guess I can start getting them and cross my fingers that I get invited within the next 6 months.

Regarding the medical exam: my province seems to have just TWO panel physicians, should I also start booking that ASAP for both me and my wife?

It is valid for 6 months if you are staying in that country. If you are no longer stay in that country or don't plan to go there, it is valid forever. It is clearly stated in the website.

So yes, you should start to gather all of those now and don't need the finger cross for the invitation because of the PCC. But for the sake of the invitation only.
