Extend Stay in Canada Past Work Permit Expiry?

Hi,

Hoping somebody can provide some help with this.

(I initially phoned IRCC Client Support Centre for advice, but their call volumes were such that I couldn’t be transferred to a consultant.)

- We are a family of three (husband, wife and school-aged son) undertaking a teacher exchange and currently living in Canada as Temporary Residents.
- Our two Work Permits and one Study Permit expire on 31 December 2017. We have no further work/study obligations after that. (Note that the Permits are marked, “This does not authorize re-entry.”)
- We assume we need to depart Canada on or before the expiry date on our Permits. However, our exchange counterparts in Australia do not vacate our usual home until 14 January. So, we need to fill in a couple of weeks until then, maybe spending some time in the U.S.

My questions are:

If we do nothing, do we need to depart Canada on or before the expiry date on our Permits?
Is it possible to leave Canada before the expiry date on our Permits and re-enter briefly in January?
If we apply for an extension of stay, which category would it fall under?
e.g. Visitor visa (from inside Canada) or Visitor extension or Work Permit Extension?

Thanks.

1. Yes.
2. Yes, there is no guarantee of re-admission.
3. You apply for a visitor extension.
