NOC 4012 - Research/Teaching Assistant questions

Hi All,

I have browsed through the threads about NOC 4012 - RA/TA in the past few days but couldn't find a definitive answer. So I am opening a new thread.

Work experience
1. Work outside of Canada as NOC 4012 - RA (can include TA if needed) during Masters, two years full time work experience.
2. Work in USA as NOC 4012 - RA and TA during PhD (ongoing), one year full-time equivalent work experience (20hrs/wk x 1.5 yrs).

Question 1: May I ask if I could claim them as work experience and use them to claim FSW and CRS foreign work experience points? CIC specifically stated that TA/RA experience inside Canada wouldn't count under CEC, but in my case, my work experience is foreign and will apply under FSW.

Question 2: After received ITA (if i am lucky!), what document do I need to prove work experience? I know a reference letter is a must, but do I have to provide pay slips? My first work experience don't have pay slips , but they may issue me a certificate saying my total salary during my two-year work is XXX dollars. Would this work?

Question 3: Also, my first foreign experience has fairly low salary because I am from a low income country (say $350 CAD/mo), would CIC have question on this?

Question 4: Would NOC 4012 being treated differently than other NOCs? If you were rejected or approved under NOC 4012, please please share your experience! Thanks!!

Your NOC is similar to mine. Although I have applied under both NOC 4011 and 4012. I am currently a PhD candidate in Canada and you are right that RA/TA outside of Canada can be treated as work experience if it is paid.

Ans 1: You can show your work experience as RA/TA since you had them outside of Canada.

Ans 2: You need to show them a reference letter on your university's letterhead, which should mention you as a RA/TA, your salary, number of hours worked per month, your duties etc. I had bank statements of my previous work experience so I showed those in my express entry file. A salary certificate should be sufficient.

Ans 3: Does not matter if it is low paid or highly paid, the only thing is it should be paid simple.

Ans 4: There is no difference between NOC 4012 and other NOCs. All NOCs are treated equally.

Yes. You can claim the points for 2 years as RA. Get reference letter from your supervisor indicating everything.

Same questions, I saw in the other thread, that

4012 will be harder for RA because most duties in 4012 are TA related.

I am RA and if I am using NOC4012, do I need to include duties for TA?

In similar situation here - does TA experience during masters at US university count? It was paid work.

All RA experience counts provided its post bachelors degree.

I have successfully claimed PPR using RA experience under NOC 4012

My 2 years RA in masters program counted to 1.3 years equivalent due to 20 hrs/week and this was back in INDIA.

I have 4 years RA experience in USA under NOC 4012 and same duties during PhD program so that counted to 2.6 years.

These work experiences totaled to more than 3 years which i claimed for PPR.

So yes RA/TA experience counts under NOC 4012 for FSW points but for CEC, unfortunately you cant use RA/TA while studying in CANADA.

I had 35 hr/week work experience as RA in south korea. I got reference letter from my prof. Is RA countable as 35 hr/week job?

Sure it will but do u have a paystub mentioning salary and same hours or HR letter from university and bank deposits for your salary?

Its highly recommended you present those.

I do not have pay subs or bank deposit history. I done my RA like 4 years back. All I have is my supervisor letter. Is it ok?

RAs/TAs in the USA typically do not work 52 weeks per year, so I suspect you are overestimating your work experience. Appointments are semester-based, with 16 weeks being a typical semestser. If you worked 16 weeks per semester for 3 semesters, you would have about 32 weeks FTE; if you worked another 2 months through the summer, it would be 36-38 weeks FTE (still less than one year).

Yes. This info is on the IRCC website. It may say only "TA" but RA counts too.

See the section on "Proof of Work Experience". http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/tools/perm/express/intake-complete.asp

The main document is the letter of employment / reference letter, that MUST contain specific pieces of information, as outlined on the website.

For the USA you can include your W2s as supporting documents (same thing as T4s in Canada). Paystubs are not strictly necessary, but can be used as supporting documents if there are deficiencies in your letter of employment.

If that is the norm for your country, then it is not a problem.

What about RA work overseas no TA, only two RA bullet points as matching. Not enrolled in any programme and some working in a university and some a medical research institute non university. Have academic publications relating to all projects some first author 2121 seems a postdoc code and 2221 only 3 of seven duties match. I get paid the same as an entry postdoc due to 15years experience and a masters so not sure if salaries will look out of whack!?! Very confused.

May I please ask you how much work experience you were able to claim for RA/TA category?

I may be in a similar situation as you are. I have 20 hours/week continuous work experience in RA/TA category for 4.5 years (4 years, 6 months and some days to be exact). During that time, there was no unpaid leave or unpaid period. In other words, the work experience was continuous. Can I claim 3 years for that work experience?

I also have one year experience in the Business Industry working as an Analyst. However, the 1 year experience is discontinued. Meaning, I work first as an analyst for a period of 7 months between May 2012 and November 20112. Later, I work as an analyst for 3 months between December 2013 and March 2014. Finally, recently as an analyst from June 2017 to September 2017. I wonder if I can claim points for analyst experience under FSW with the above. Do we need 1 year experience without interruption?

I hope I can get some very useful information from this forum as I find the people here very helpful and willing to help.

Are you a US citizen? If not, you are not legally allowed to work 30 hrs/week on student visa. The maximum allowed time is 20 hrs/week.
Also, is your TA/RA experience continuous throughout University breaks (e.g., summer, winter)?

No I am not a citizen. Yes you are right, the maximum allowed time is 20hrs/week. That is what I did. Sorry for the 30 hours mistake. Yes, TA/RA experience was continuous throughout University breaks (e.g., summer, winter). I started January 2015 and ended my TA/RA experience in May 2017. In the CIC website, it states that: equal amount in part-time: 15 hours/week for 24 months = 1 year full time (1,560 hours) makes you eligible.

Am I qualified here to use it as a work experience under FSW?
