Staying in Canada after getting the PR

Hi All,

I got to know that if you have the PR card then you need to live inside Canada for at least 2 years in each 5 years (until it get expired). So, if I get my first PR ever now, can I go back to my home country immediately for 3 years and come back to Canada to stay 2 years?

I might need to do this just to stay in my home country until I found a good job offer, or to close things in my home country.

Yes, this is generally correct. Once you land, you can go back to your home country for 3 years, and then spend the last 2 years of your first 5-years of PR in Canada to maintain your PR Status. Just make sure you accurately calculate the days to ensure you have 2 years, because you don't want any issues to come up with regard to the physical residency requirement when you renew your PR Card...also keep track of the laws; you never know when the physical residency requirement could change.

Also keep in mind that this will have implications if you decide to apply for citizenship. You need to have at least 3 years of physical residency (as of now; again, laws can change) in order to apply for citizenship.

Yes - but that's a bad idea and this does not work out well for many people. If you are outside of Canada for three years, then you must return to Canada and remain in Canada for two years without leaving to be able to renew your PR card. It's usually unrealistic to remain in Canada two years without leaving since there may be family emergencies outside of Canada or you may want to take vacations outside of Canada. I would recommend you plan to remain outside of Canada for two years instead of three.

Remember its counted by days, so as members already answered above, if you leave it too tight then you might be risking it. You must stay for exactly 730 days in canada during your first 5 year period.
