Hi All,

i have received my ITA in the previous draw and I am filling up my information as required. I have a question about the given names and the last name printed on my passport. My entire name is under the "given name" section and my family name is blank. However the online application needs a last name as a mandatory field.

Does anyone have an idea on what to do?

Thanks
A

This is what CIC states 'If you do not have a family name on your passport, travel or identity document, enter all your given name(s) in the surname field and leave the given name field blank. Do not enter “*”, “Not applicable” or “NA”.'

Yes that is what CIC states but it doesn't work out that way. My father-in-law did not have a Given Name on his passport. So I initially filled in the surname as mentioned on his passport and left the Given Name field blank. However the system DID NOTaccept a blank field contrary to what CIC says on its website on leaving the Given Name field blank. So I did mention "Not Applicable" in the Given Name field and wrote an LOE stating that the system is not accepting a blank in the Given Name field, therefore I'm mentioning Not Applicable there. I also attached a copy of my father-in-law's passport signifying no mention of a Given Name. It worked for me and I have COPR now.

So my suggestion is to first try if the system accepts a blank field. If it does not, then do what I did and write Not Applicable and also write an LOE stating that you wrote Not Applicable because of the system not accepting a blank. Attach the passport copy too.

Hi, I am in the same boat. However i mentioned first name and last name as same for my father and mother in the family info section. I have not mentioned anything in the LOE and my father and mother do not have passport as of now. Would it create any confusion. My medical has got passed and background check is in progress. Please advise.

Hi, I'm also in similar situation, would appreciate if you could let me know if your application was successful or did you have to provide any additional documentation?

IRCC created sort of confusion for applicants; look below the COPY+ PASTE from GUIDE 5525 LATEST:-

"If you don’t have a family name on your passport or travel document,
enter all given names in the family name field and enter “N/A” or “Not
applicable” in the given name field.
If you don’t have a given name on your passport or travel document,
enter “N/A” or “Not applicable” in the given name field."

NOW READ THIS LINK:--
https://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?qnum=014&top=4

"Your surname is your family name. It is also called your “last name.” When filling out applications, type your surname as it appears on your passport, travel or identity document.
Do not use initials.
If you do not have a family name on your passport, travel or identity document, enter all your given name(s) in the surname field and leave the given name field blank. Do not enter “Not applicable,” “*” or “NA.”
