Hi, I used to work for 28 hrs / week a couple of months ago. Is it considered as full-time or part-time.?

Just because it is part-time doesn't mean you can only count 15 hours per week.

You can count 28 hrs per week.

Its counted as part-time work. However, it won't cause much troubles to you since you're very close to 30 hour mark.

You'll have to work just 56 weeks (4 weeks extra) to earn the one-year Canadian work experience equivalent credit.

It’s definitely part-time.


Although, CIC website doesn't dictates what's the minimum number of hours that you must work per week, I would recommend you call CIC and ask if 8 hours per week is okay for work experience purposes. This is because 8 hours per week is far way too less and it would take you nearly 45 months (3.75 years) to accumulate mandatory 1560 hours.


Also, when we talk about NOC 0, A, B it generally means that your position entails certain responsibilities and if you don’t fulfill those responsibilities then it might be hard/impossible for the place where you’re working to function smoothly. And with 8 hours per week, I don’t think your existence at your workplace would make a lot of impact on the organization and this might raise the eyebrows of the CIC officer.


If we go by the hard and fast immigration rules, it’s part-time, eligible and acceptable work experience but personally I won’t feel safe if I were in your situation because officer discretion also matters during case processing and you certainly don’t want him/her to think negatively about anything.

It would count as part-time, but as gsbx pointed out, it would be impossible to accumulate enough hours within 3 years to meet the 1 year requirement. Do you have other work experience as well?

Ah... well, if you're adding up hours between two jobs, it's not quite that simple. (a) you still need to work 52 FTE weeks, and (b) If you have 2 simultaneous jobs, you can count a maximum of 30 hours per week. So, for example, if you work a full-time job and a part-time job at the same time, it does not "speed up" your eligibility. It still only counts as one week.

So you need to count your hours at the weekly level...

Then there's the fact that if you're talking about in-Canada experience, if you were on a study permit, the experience will not count.

my first 10 weeks was from my part time (~8 hours admin officer job). I made a total of 330 hours from it, so I simply divided 330 by 30hrs p/w.

and then get the remaining 42 weeks from my 2 subsequent FT jobs which are 35 and 40 hours p/w, resp. - counting 30 hours p/w maximum.

As at the time of invitation, I hadn't acquired 52 hours from FT jobs, only attained that as at the time of submitting my application.

My question; do you think my first 10 weeks would be an issue from the way it was worked out?

And yes, not on a study permit (on a work permit).

Color me confused, but 10 weeks * 8 hours per week is 80 hours, not 330...? That is the equivalent of abt 2.6 weeks.

Unfortunately - (1) you MUST have the minimum of one year of work experience at the time you receive the ITA, and (2) it looks like you don't have the equivalent of 52 weeks even with the part-time work, unless you can clear up the confusion?

01 to August 31 and Research Assistant from Aug 31 to Dec 31 - all with the same employer but different supervisors). Ah so, OK, 10 weeks FTE. Why don't you give a timeline -

PT JOB: May 3 - Dec 31, 2015? 10 FTE weeks...

FT JOB1: Date to Date, 2016? # weeks

FT JOB2: Date to Date, 2017? # weeks
